摘要:
AbstractAlthough the geodimeter is well established from the land survey viewpoint, it is possibly not as widely used for engineering survey as it might be. The author describes some recent experience on this, and comments on some of the difficulties encountered.

摘要:
AbstractAt a meeting of the Association of British Geodesists held on the 5th April, 1965 at the rooms of the Royal Astronomical Society a discussion took place on Crustal Movements and their Measurement. This discussion was based on three short introductory papers specially prepared for the meeting. As it is thought that these papers and the resulting discussion may be of general interest to many readers, it has been decided to publish in these pages each paper in full and an account of the discussion which followed them.

摘要:
Abstract1. At the last IUGG General Assembly at Berkeley, California I read a paper which was a joint effort by Commander Suthons and myself on the subject of mean sea level changes around the coasts of the British Isles and the possible significance of these changes. Since writing that paper we did some further work in which we attempted to separate vertical movements of the land (crustal movements) from those of the sea. This was briefly mentioned at the same meeting and was illustrated with slides but has not yet appeared in print.

摘要:
AbstractA practical method of determining small horizontal movements of the Earth's crust would clearly be of great value in fundamental and applied geophysics for it would contribute to an understanding of movements on faults and in earthquakes, to development of methods of earthquake prediction and, perhaps, to further knowledge of large scale structures in the crust such as are suggested by Earth tide studies.

摘要:
AbstractIt is a truism to state that the best field work is valueless unless it is adequately recorded but it is not always fully appreciated that the lasting quality of such work is considerably diminished unless it is stored in a manner permitting rapid and accurate recovery. It is further true to say that the best-kept Records Office has little value unless there is clear indication of what is contained therein; no matter how orderly and systematic the storage of records, one cannot search for a record unless one is aware of its existence. Finally the system applied is intended to outlast the designer who evolved it and so must be framed in such a general and obvious manner that it may be used freely and completely by any person with a reasonable knowledge of the relevant subject. Similarly, the record itself must be long-lived and particularly in tropical countries where material deterioration is rapid and the destruction risk is high, preservation presents a very real problem.

摘要:
AbstractWhen the results of the 3rd Geodetic Levelling of England and Wales, which was observed between 1952 and 1956, were analysed and compared with the results of the 2nd Geodetic Levelling (1912–1921), certain significant points came to notice. These points have already been discussed elsewhere [1, 2, 3, 4], but as their implications may affect a number of organisations that have not had access to these papers, it is believed that some account in a widely read journal, such asThe Survey Review, is warranted. Briefly, it was found virtually impossible to reconcile the apparent movements of the land as revealed by a comparison of the levellings either with known tectonic trends or with records of the three tide gauges to which both the levellings had been referred. It was thought that a possible cause of these discrepancies might be a systematic error introduced into levelling extending in a North-South direction by a tendency for the levelling staves to give a slightly lower reading when illuminated by direct sunlight than they did in the shade.

摘要:
AbstractA sample of 100 trials comprising four different survey processes is studied with a view to assessing the magnitude and characteristics of the residual station/line errors, after adjustment, in terms of an estimate of the error accumulation over the relevant sequence, the processes involved not being of geodetic accuracy.
