摘要:
AbstractThe author attempts to show how a small electronic computer can be programmed for survey calculations and adjustments, giving methods and formulae that have been successfully applied to the IBM 1620. The programmes were written for Lambert, but would differ only in minor particulars for computations on any other projection.

摘要:
AbstractThis article is an account of primary levelling operations within the context of a national development plan. The scheme was originally conceived in 1960 by the then Commissioner for Surveys, Mr. C. W. Hindle, under whose direction a major part of the project has been undertaken. The author is in charge of the Computing and Survey Examination Section of the Tanganyika Survey Division and is responsible for the processing of observational data. Within the next two years, the primary levelling should reach Lake Victoria and interesting comparisons with Kenya and Uganda results will be available.

摘要:
AbstractGiven a mathematical description for an equivalent (equal area) map projection, innumerable families of equivalent map projections can be derived from it by the systematic use of numerical constants. The procedure is exemplified by using the azimuthal equivalent projection as the point of departure.

摘要:
AbstractTwo methods of forming the condition equations in a trilateration network are described; one suitable for machine computation, and the other for logarithms. The example treated by Murphy and Thornton-Smith has been used to illustrate the method.

摘要:
AbstractMost writers on mathematical subjects are aware that setting up mathematical papers or books in type calls for the services of compositors who are specialists in their trade but it is not so generally known that, although the setting up of ordinary letterpress has been done for many years now by means of a machine called a monotype, so saving much time and labour, it has only fairly recently become possible to set up mathematical work and formulae completely by machine. In many cases in mathematics it is possible to write a formula in several different ways but not all of these are suitable for machine setting and some would still need to be made up by hand, thus wasting time and money. It follows, therefore, that it would be an immense advantage if the writer on a mathematical subject knew something about how best to prepare his manuscript or typescript for the printer, to express his formulae, which in the absence of a suitable mathematical typewriter will have to be written in by hand, in a form that best suits the compositor and machine composition, and, finally, how best to correct his proofs. With a view to assisting authors in this respect, the printers of thisReviewhave brought out a most useful booklet, compiled by Mr. R. G. Hitchings and entitled“The Mathematician and the Printer: Hints on the Preparation of Mathematical and Technical Manuscripts”, which sells at 10s.6d. post free. The recommendations contained in the booklet comply for the most part with those of The London Mathematical Society as laid down in their publication“Notes on the Preparation of Mathematical Papers”and on those contained in the British Standards Publication BS.1991.

摘要:
Abstract1. The surveys required for registration of title for flats and maisonettes and parts of buildings in England follow the same general principles as those on which registration of ordinary land is based. That is to say, sufficiently accurate plans are required to identify and locate the property being registered, and to define its limits closely enough to identify the physical boundaries concerned without actually saying where the theoretical boundaries (or lines or planes) lie in relation to them. In other words, the principle of“general boundaries”is applied in this case also as in registration of land.
