摘要:
AbstractThis article sets down a number of approximate but easily memorised ways of using the sun, moon and a few stars to provide navigational and other information without the help of special instruments, astronomical tables, or even computing aids beyond a pencil and a scrap of paper. Some of the rules are well known and, though others have been evolved by the author on his own account, it is likely that all have previously been discovered. No originality is claimed for any of them, but the author believes that no convenient collection of these“stick and string”methods exists and that to have them brought together in one place may be of interest, even of use.

摘要:
AbstractA geoidal section, of 43 stations at about 20 km. spacing, has been observed between Dover and the North coast of Scotland as part of the world-wide scheme recommended by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics at its General Assembly in Oslo in 1948. The methods used are described and the results and accuracies obtained are presented. The section has been computed both on local Datum, on European Datum and on Fischer's new Astro-Geodetic World Datum.

摘要:
AbstractLet be the matrix notation of a set ofrlinear equations which we have obtained when trying to determine the numerical values ofmrequired quantitiesx1,x2,…,xm. In geodesy, as in other applied sciences, the valuesuiof the constant terms are found by observation, and therefore the consistency of the linear system 1.1 depends on the errors of observation.

摘要:
AbstractSome geodetic methods are geometrical, some are physical, and others have something of both these qualities. In recent years there has been a tendency to mark this distinction more clearly, to the benefit of geodetic science in general.
