摘要:
AbstractThis article is an attempt to show the sort of agreement that is obtained between real errors and least-squares adjustments in a complicated triangulation figure. The agreement between statistical estimates, such as the standard error and the coefficient of correlation, and the true values of these quantities, is examined for this special case. The results obtained give a clear indication of the best that can be expected from any least-squares adjustment.

摘要:
AbstractA simple method of exploratory survey is described, in which a light-weight camera is used. This method is particularly useful in mountainous country, and it enables maximum use to be made of small breaks in the weather. The author describes his own experiences as surveyor on the Combined Services Expedition to South Georgia in 1964–65.

摘要:
AbstractThe majority of geodetic computations carried out on digital computers follow a straightforward routine or set of formulae and require simultaneously an amount of computational data well within the storage capacity of most computers in operation. The least squares adjustment and error analysis of large geodetic networks does, however, present a problem and constitutes the subject of this article which is published in two parts.

摘要:
AbstractElectronic analogues may be used to solve observation and condition equations in a simple way, the available computing capacity limiting the size of the problem which may be solved. Linear equations are programmed and simulated by electrical and electronic units in a manner which poses little difficulty to those with only a limited knowledge of electrical theory and practice. Programmed problems may be corrected and re-arranged on the patch-board during the solution. Results are displayed on an illuminated dial in numerical form and may be printed out. Worked examples are given for the two different types of correction equations.

摘要:
AbstractMethods of reducing gyro-theodolite observations are reviewed, and simple general formulae are derived by the authors for reducing even or odd sets of observed turning points of the gyro-oscillations.
