摘要:
AbstractThis satellite was first seen briefly in Nairobi at the end of December 1960. By the end of January 1961 rough times for two successive passages had made identification possible, and by March 1961 predictions for its reappearance derived from the orbital elements computed according to the routine described in this paper were working reasonably well. Repeated observations have improved both the methods used and the results obtained from them.

摘要:
AbstractRule11A.Polaris, the North or Pole Star, may be taken as coincident with the north celestial pole and as indicating true north with an error never exceeding 2°except in polar latitudes. It can be seen, in favourable circumstances, down to 15°or even 10°North. The two stars in the Great Bear, known as the pointers, are too well known to need further description. It is worth memorising that the Pole lies at a distance from the most northerly of the two pointers equal to about 5 times the distance between them. This may be useful in low latitudes or when there are patches of slow-moving cloud about.

摘要:
Abstract(i)Geodetic. As already mentioned, geodetic fixes were made by trigonometrical methods where possible, otherwise by plane table on the six inch or twenty-five inch map. The Ordnance Survey very kindly computed spheroidal co-ordinates for all the stations in terms of the Retriangulation. Standard errors averaged 0″.1 on the trig fixes, many of the points used being old tertiary points not yet included in the Retriangulation, and 0″.2 on the map fixes.

摘要:
AbstractThe Zeiss subtense bar and precise traversing equipment consists basically of sets of tripods and tribrachs into the centres of which fit the Theodolite Th.3, traversing targets, optical plummet and the subtense bar, all fitted with identical plugs for insertion into the sockets. Thus subtense bar, traverse target and theodolite are readily interchangeable with the optical plumbing device without disturbing either the centring or the level of the tribrach.

摘要:
AbstractWhen it is desired to test the merits of the two rival methods of triangulation adjustment—by directions and by angles—the first impulse is to assume a set of true positions of fixed and new points, compute azimuths between them, add arbitrary errors to true directions to make them“observed”directions, and find out how both methods have handled the problem. The evaluation of the two methods may then be made from the comparison of true errors with their respective corrections. Likewise, we can compare true positions of new points with final positions obtained from adjustments.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper is based on astronomical longitude determinations made at eight Laplace stations in South Australia and their subsequent calculation. The observations were made with a Wild T4 Universal Instrument and standard accessories.
