摘要:
AbstractThe design and manufacture of distance measuring instruments for geodesy has advanced to the point where the problems of defining refractive index along a measured line provide the largest source of error in the measurement of distance. A series of studies has been initiated to determine the possible advantages of measuring lines in pairs. The results of studies made thus far in two locations show that use of line pairs provides useful information about atmospheric refraction during the time of measurement and may improve the accuracy of trilateration and traverse.

摘要:
AbstractNow that it is becoming commonplace to measure the lengths of traverse legs by means of Electronic Distance Measurement equipment, several surveyors have asked the author how best the method of least squares adjustment of a traverse, suggested in a previous article, [2], can be modified so that weights assigned to distance measurements are sensitive to the zero error of the E.D.M. instrument used. This article suggests a means whereby this may be done, and illustrates the method by a numerical example. Eleven commercial traverses are analysed, in which the E.D.M. instrument used was a Wild DI.10 Distomat, and the variations between the Least Squares solution and the Bowditch method are shown.

摘要:
AbstractA least-squares procedure is proposed for adjusting long EDM traverses by conditions The method, which can be used on a desk calculator, compares favourably on both theoretical and practical grounds with variation-of-coordinates and Bowditch's rule. Test results seem to confirm long-held doubts about the suitability of the Bowditch adjustment for precise survey work.
