摘要:
AbstractThis paper gives a brief account of the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS) field work in and around the Okavango swamp in N.W. Botswana and the subsequent mapping of the area. The work was carried out between 1968 and 1971 by the DOS Botswana party on behalf of the Botswana Government, and it formed part of a specific United Nations Development Project, an investigation into the potential of the Okavango river and the enormous swamps into which it drains.

摘要:
AbstractThis is the third review of a small calculator to appear in theSurvey Reviewin four issues. The Hewlett Packard 35 (Cox 1972) was heralded as a tremendous breakthrough in calculating machines for surveyors and is now very popular. The Casiofx−1 (Dowman 1973) is a larger machine but still portable and with similar features to the HP 35. This new machine—the Sumlock Micro Scientist—is comparable in size to the Casio but offers a combination of the best features of the others, and more. Despite a temptation to review the Sumlock by comparing it with the other two machines this will be resisted in the interests of objectivity. However in order to facilitate comparison by the reader a similar format to the other reviews will be followed.

摘要:
AbstractResearch has shown that electronic distance measurements made concurrently from a station are likely to suffer from common systematic scale effects. A general solution closely allied to traditional practice is developed for both the parametric and conditional adjustment problems. The shape and size of the network as well as the differential scale effects are determined. The parametric solution in particular, is almost identical to the usual variation of co-ordinates adjustment in common use. The article highlights the need for further research into the distribution of the scale factors on both a time and locality basis and shows that the absolute size of the network cannot be determined unless at least one external constraint operates upon the network.

摘要:
AbstractThe Conference was held in a committee room of the Africa Hall, the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Africa, whose Cartographic Adviser, Mr. Charly Antoun was Technical Secretary. Due to the short notice, only a few national reports and technical papers were available before the Conference or at the beginning; but others came through in time to be read before they were presented. There were no advanced, technical papers—it was not that sort of conference. Under the firm management of Mr. Coker (Director of Federal Surveys Nigeria and President of the Conference) and of the Technical Secretary, the actual conduct of the discussions (in English and French) was excellent. The fact that there was no splitting up into separate technical commissions and the small size of the conference (only about 80 members) made it relatively easy to start punctually and keep everyone informed of the programme. The same four interpreters functioned efficiently throughout, apd there was virtually no trouble with the microphone and earphone system; but the conference suffered from lack of good meeting facilities outside the sessions, especially in the evenings.

摘要:
AbstractThe introduction during the last few years of desk calculators with automatic trigonometrical functions brought with it one small problem. Whereas most theodolite (or other) circles are graduated in degrees, minutes and seconds, the calculators can only readily digest degrees and decimals. For those using circles graduated in grads, the problem is less difficult, since the simple subtraction of 0.1 times the grad angle from itself gives the degree equivalent. To convert degrees, minutes and seconds, requires two successive divisions by 60 plus additions, warranting some 12 program steps. Some recent machines have overcome this problem with one or two key operations to achieve the conversion.

摘要:
AbstractYour reviewer is beset by conflicting opinions by this new venture of the Ordnance Survey to popularise their productions by the modification of national map series into forms which are more convenient, more useful and more acceptable to the general user-public.

AbstractSince it appears that theStar Almanac for Land Surveyorsis not in common use among Canadian surveyors, it is of interest to note leaflets issued by the Surveyor General to take its place.
