摘要:
AbstractThe growth of a modern Institute for training surveyors in Sri Lanka is traced in broad outline from colonial times. The Institute was established in 1968 as a United Nations Development Programme project of four years' duration in close co-operation with the Survey Department. In 1972, at the end of the project period, it become independent, administered by a Director, responsible to the Surveyor General who is assisted by an Advisory-Co-ordinating Committee comprising three persons with particular interests in Survey education. The Courses available are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper deals with problems of area computation confronted in the Asejire Dam site Survey. The site is a gigantic polygon having about 1000 vertices and a perimeter of about 40 miles. The solutions rationalise analytical area computations and provide systematic checking procedures. Some new methods for equalising irregular boundaries and for the subdivision of plots are also dealt with in this paper.

摘要:
AbstractIn survey astronomy there is a frequent need for at-a-glance conversion at any time or date between Right Ascension/declination and azimuth/altitude values of any star.A two-dimensional star-chart with a date/time scale and an azimuth/altitude cursor is described, for use at a fixed station.

摘要:
AbstractThe current availability of desk top electronic calculators appears to have increased the interest in the least squares method of traverse adjustment. But with the present methods of accuracy estimation for the observed bearings and distances, does it really give co-ordinates which have the least displacement from their true or absolute values when compared with other adjustment methods? An attempt is made in this paper to answer this question by simulation techniques. From the analysis of eleven traverses of different types and orientation it was found that the Bowditch method does in fact distort traverses much more seriously than four other methods considered. Also, the least squares method gives the least absolute traverse distortions if the accuracy rationc= (σs/S)/σasin 1″is not less than 10.

摘要:
AbstractThe error induced by temperature in hydrostatic levelling has been shown to be reduced by the use of binary liquid systems. Their application, however, requires the assumption of some system temperature so as to minimise the effect of non-linearity in the liquid density-temperature relationships. This paper develops the equation relating this temperature to other system variables and comments on the significance of the results.
