AbstractMaintaining the content of a surveying curriculum so that it is current requires regular reassessment of the expected future tasks of surveyors. The surveyor must be able to respond to rapid developments in computing, satellite positioning, computer graphics, image management, and spatial information systems. This paper presents a view of the expected future role of a professional surveyor and its impact on the development of the curriculum of a Bachelor of Surveying Course. Descriptions are given of the goals and principles used for the development of the revised Bachelor of Surveying Course at the University of New South Wales. The course was developed on the basis of a flexible structure comprising strands in basic sciences, computing surveying, higher surveying, land information management and professional practice. The expectation is that future modifications can be achieved within these strands without a major restructuring. The course structure and implementation procedures are presented in detail as a contribution towards the ongoing debate on curriculum design.

AbstractBecause of inhospitable terrain, there are practical difficulties in the acquisition of gravity or satellite data for determining the earth's gravity field in high mountain regions. Also, because of the limitations of both gravimetric and astrogeodetic-gravimetric methods in the absence of observational data and the difficulties in direct application of satellite techniques using satellite altimetry, laser ranging, Doppler etc. due to geographic inaccessibility, a geodynamic method with a higher degree geopotential coefficient solution appears to be the only alternative in determining the earth's gravity field without recourse to actual ground observations. In addition, the terrestrial free-air gravity anomaly data as used in existing geopotential coefficient solutions, appear to be defective on various counts noted in [3].Apart from providing improved formulae for the computation of 1°×1°mean free-air gravity anomalies through extended forms of regression equations having both station elevations and positional coordinates as arguments to account for possible layer-wise crustal density variations inside the large 1°×1°squares as detailed in [4], the relevant corrections to reduce the ground level 1°×1°mean free-air gravity anomaly values to the geoid, have been computed and provided in tabular forms in [6], for general use in geopotential coefficients solutions.The 1°×1°mean free-air anomaly values obtained, on being converted into corresponding isostatic anomalies using relevant Airy isostatic corrections, were then utilised in filling the present 1°×1°mean isostatic anomaly gaps at places over mountainous regions by making use of the same methodology as in the case of 1°×1°mean free-air anomaly values [4]. The 1°×1°mean isostatic anomalies predicted, are then converted back into 1°×1°mean free-air anomalies for use in the precise geopotential coefficients solutions, in order to obtain the 10 global geoid and mean free-air gravity anomalies more precisely for geodetic and geophysical determinations.

AbstractCarrier phase measurements (CPM) can be used effectively to develop GPS positioning accuracies. However, the cycle slip in distance measurements from a receiver's antenna to GPS satellites has placed limits on the applications for kinematic measurements on vehicles, ships and low-orbit spacecrafts. When the speed of a spacecraft-borne receiver is as high as several kilometres per second it is necessary to solve real-time in terms of measured distances from the receiver's antenna to GPS satellites, so as to determine its real-time positions. This paper proposes a step solution based on a synergist of four simultaneous observables for the measured distances per instant without an application of the P-code, surveying the time difference between dual frequency signals with a hardware in the described receiver.

AbstractA summary of the history of geodetic control surveys in Kenya is given and this is related to a geodetic datum. Determination of datum transformation parameters is carried out for the 7-parameter and 3-parameter models using 25 points distributed over the country. The determined parameters relate the local Arc Datum (1960) on Clarke 1880 ellipsoid to the Satellite Geocentric Datum on WGS 72 ellipsoid and the values of the translation parameters are−179·1 m,−39·7 m and−304·1 m in the X, Yand Z axes respectively, with a scale parameter error of about−0·3 ppm and the rotation parameters are less than 1″of arc for each axis.

AbstractThe paper examines whether changes in technology have substantially altered the economic case for regarding the Hydrographic Survey Services as public goods to be provided as a public service. After a survey of the manner in which technology has altered the working practices of Hydrographic Survey Service, it concludes that there has been no major change in the economic rationale for regarding it as a public good.
