AbstractParticles present in commercial suspension and mass PVC polymers possess a wide range of sizes and structures. This paper concentrates on the influence of the processes on the formation and morphology of these particles.Suspension polymer particles are usually fairly irregular in shape and have an outer “skin” which often extends over the entire surface of the particle and this skin is frequently ruptured. Studies have indicated that the outer skin is formed during the early stages of polymerisation. Suspension PVC particles may have varying degrees of internal porosity which often consist of two types of pore, namely small interstitial voids between sub‐particles or “microgranules” and much larger voids which are often lined with skin. The size and structure of these particles is dependent on agitation conditions in the reactor, colloid stability and the interfacial tension of the vinyl chloride/aqueous phase system.Mass PVC is produced commercially by a two stage process. In many respects, the polymer produced is similar to suspension PVC but there are important morphological differences. Mass polymer has no “skin”, a microgranular structure persists from the particle surfaces to their interiors, and the voids, which constitute the internal porosity, are of the small type of interstices between microgranules. AbstractThe photooxidation of 2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenol (I) and 2,2′‐methylene‐bis(4‐methyl‐6‐tert‐butylphenol) (II) sensitized with methylene blue in dichloromethane was investigated. The oxidation of phenol I proceeds at a reduced rate, but otherwise similar to the oxidation in methanol, that is, with the formation of 2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methyl‐4‐hydroperoxy‐2,5‐cyclohexadiene‐1‐one (III, R = tert‐butyl). On the other hand, bisphenol II remains almost unoxidized in dichloromethane. This is due to the formation of stilbenequinoid derivatives of type VI which slow down the oxidation even at insignificant concentrations. The effect approaches that of β‐carotene. Phenol I has a much weaker tendency towards the formation of an analogous derivatives, i.e. 3,5,3′,5′‐tetra‐tert‐butylstil‐benequinone (VIII), which however is also an active retarder of oxidation. A more detailed study carried out with VIII indicates that the mechanism of its effect is the same as for β‐carotene, that is, the quenching of singlet oxygen. AbstractThe formation of a polyurethane network from poly(propylene glycol) terminated with 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate and from 1,1,1‐trimethylolpropane was investigated by light scattering and electron microscopy. The results indicate that the nonhomogeneities are formed in the system and that their size increases with increasing conversion up to gel point. AbstractEs wurde der Einfluß der Copolykondensationsbedingungen auf einige Eigenschaften der Copolyamide aus Caprolactam, Terephthalsäure und Äthylendiamin mit einem TE‐Salzgehalt bis 15 mol‐% hinsichtlich der Gewinnung von faserbildenden modifizierten Polyamiden untersucht. Zur quantitativen Bestimmung des Einflusses der Synthesebedingungen auf die Eigenschaften der Copolymeren wurden lineare und unvollständige quadratische Regressionsgleichungen abgeleitet. AbstractDie Entschwefelungseigenschaften von Raney‐Nickel, das aus einer 50proz. Nickel‐Aluminium‐Legierung durch Behandlung mit verschiedenen Konzentrationen an Natronlauge und bei verschiedenen Temperaturen gewonnen wurde, wurden als Funktion des an der spezifischen Oberfläche sorbierten Wasserstoffs und des Aluminiumrestes untersucht.Das durch Behandlung der Ausgangslegierung mit 10‐ und 26proz. Natronlauge bei 50°C und 80°C erhaltene Raney‐Nickel führt zu einer maximalen Entschwefelung bei niedermolekularen organischen Verbindungen. Das so entstandene Gitter‐Metall besteht aus großen Teilchen mit minimalem Gehalt an Aluminiumresten und hoher spezifischer Oberfläche.Das aus der Ausgangslegierung durch Aluminiumentzug mit 2proz. Natronlauge bei 20°C erhaltene Raney‐Nickel zeichnet sich durch einen beträchtlichen Anteil an Aluminiumresten, eine sehr geringe spezifische Oberfläche und einen hohen Dispersionsgrad aus. AbstractThe polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in water in presence of some Egyptian sands and quartz pegmatite using sodium bisulphite as initiator. The polymerization was performed at 30, 40, 50 and 60°C using initiator concentrations varying from 0.05 to 0.3 mol/l.The overall rates of polymerization increased from 2.0 × 10−5mol/l·s to 4.8 × 10−5mol/l·s in presence of quartz pegmatite, to 5 × 10−5mol/l·s when Natron sand was used and to 6.4 × 10−5mol/l·s in the presence of Ahram sand, as the concentration of each was varied from 0 to 30 g/l.The effect of change of temperature, initiator and monomer concentration on the overall rate of polymerization was studied.The molecular weights were determined viscosimetrically. It was found that the average molecular weights of the obtained polymers increase with the increase of both monomer and initiator concentrations and decrease with rise of temperature. Ahram sand leads to a higher polymer yield and a lower average molecular weight than in case of Natron sand.The stereoregularity of the obtained polymers was determined with a 60 MHz

Abstract„Brauns”︁‐Lignin liefert in 74,9proz. Schwefelsäure eine Hydrolysen‐Kurve, die nicht die am nativen Lignin nachgewiesenen Abspaltungs‐ und Anlagerungsvorgänge von Wasser erkennen läßt; es kann also nicht identisch mit der nativen Form des Lignins sein. „Brauns”︁‐Lignin enthält eine Zuckerkomponente, die kein wasserunlösliches Saccharid ist.Buchenschwefelsäurelignin läßt beim Kaltpressen unter hohem Druck ein plastisches Fließen erkennen und hat danach eine Dichte von 1,24 bis 1,28 g/cm3. — Versucht man, Buchenschwefelsäurelignin in eine Caprolactamschmelze einzupolymerisieren, so erhält man eine hellbraune, metallisch glänzende Masse. Aber bereits bei Ligninmengen von weniger als 1% ist das Abspinnvermögen stark beeinträchtigt. Offenbar ist das dreidimensionale Ligninmolekül so starr, daß es die lineare Ausrichtung des Polymerisates und damit die Fadenbildung stört.Es gelingt, Fichtenschwefelsäurelignin in wäßriger, schwach essigsaurer Suspension mittels Natriumchlorit in eine hochgequollene, transparente, orangefarbene Masse zu verwandeln. — Der weitere oxidative Abbau mit einem Gemisch von Wasserstoffperoxid, Essigsäureanhydrid und Eisessig führt zu sauren Produkten, deren weitere Trennung über ihre Bleisalze mit unterschiedlichen Löslichkeiten gelingt, und die auch als freie Säuren teilweise kristallisieren.
