AbstractHorseradish peroxidase was immobilized onto crosslinked acrylamide beads after a pretreatment of the enzyme with glycidyl‐methacrylate. The enzyme initiates the polymerization of the acrylic comonomers. The activity of the solid materials increases by increasing the amount of glycidyl‐methacrylate and the time of reaction between the vinyl monomer and the enzyme, while it is not greatly influenced by the concentration of the acrylamides.The beads obtained showed little dependence on diffusion; the Kmvalues using guaiacol and H2O2as substrates were the same as for free peroxidase.No decrease in stability was observed after 150h storage at room temperature or after freeze‐drying.By continuous flow measurements, using guaiacol or iodide as cosubstrate, a different adsorption of the reaction products was

AbstractFree radical polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by various α,ω‐diaminoalkane‐copper(II) complexes was studied in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. It was found that the stable copper(II) complexes, like ethylenediamine copper(II) complex, could hardly initiate the polymerization, while the unstable copper(II) complexes, such as 1,5‐diaminopentane, 1,6‐diaminohexane and n‐butylamine complexes could initiate the polymerization.Initiation was further studied spectrophotometrically. Reduction of the copper(II) to the copper(I) complexes was ascertained to occur during the polymerization by visible spectroscopy and cuproin coloration method. The rate of reduction was related closely to the stability of the diamine‐copper(II) complexes. From the results the initiation mechanism

AbstractThe reactions of iodine with vinyl acetate (VAc) — vinyl propionate (VPr) copolymers in aqueous solutions of potassium iodide were investigated photometrically. The iodine affinity (I/VAc) of VAc‐units was defined as the number of bound iodine atoms per VAc‐unit and determined from the absorbance of the formed colored complex. The dependence of the I/VAc values on the copolymer composition was discussed with respect to the sequence distribution of VAc‐units in the copolymer chains. AbstractAn Lösungen von n‐BuLi‐polymerisierten Polybutadienen mit Molekulargewichten zwischen 22000 und 660000 in Cyclohexanon wurde eine in der Literatur bisher nicht beschriebene Abhängigkeit der Viskosität vom Alter der Lösungen entdeckt. Während ungealterte Cyclohexanonlösungen eine mit Toluol‐und THF‐Lösungen übereinstimmende Konzentrationsabhängigkeit von ηspez/C aufweisen, wird mit zunehmendem Alter von Cyclohexanonlösungen ein Rückgang der Viskosität beobachtet, der — untersucht bei 20°C — nach 35 Tagen zu Konzentrationsunabhängigkeit von ηspez/C und nach 300 Tagen zu einem vom Molekulargewicht unabhängigen Staudingerindex [η] führt. Der Viskositätsrückgang endet nach ca. 600 Tagen asymptotisch bei [η]= 13 cm3/g. Kurzzeitig mit Keton behandeltes Polybutadien löst sich in Toluol nur noch extrem langsam unter gänzlich veränderten Viskositätsverhältnissen. Die für Lösungen von Polybutadien in Toluol, THF und Cyclohexanon gefundenen Beziehungen [η] = K·Mabesitzen einen gemeinsamen Schnittpunkt, dessen Koordinaten näherungsweise mit dem Staudingerindex und dem Molekulargewicht des Ultraschall‐Abbauprodukts bzw. dem elektronenoptisch ermittelten Molekulargewicht der Tertiäreinheiten des unbeschallten Polymeren übereinstimmen.Auf der Grundlage von Einsteinscher Viskositätsbeziehung und Perlschnurmolekül‐Modell wird der zeitabhängige Viskositätsrückgang als die Folge zweier sich überlagernder Veränderungen des solvatzustands diskutiert: Knäuelung der Perlschnurmoleküle zu einer dichten Kugelpackung der solvatisierten Tertiäreinheite

AbstractDurch eine radikalische Polymerisationsreaktion wird Polystyrol kovalent an die Oberfläche von Siliciumdioxid gebunden. Die Pfropfreaktion wird ausgelöst durch kovalent an der SiO2‐Oberfläche gebundene Phenylradikale, die durch thermischen Zerfall von Phenyl‐diazo‐thioäthergruppen entstehen. Die Menge des aufgepfropften Polymeren ist abhängig von den Reaktionsparametern Zeit, Temperatur und Konzentration an Monomerem und an initiierenden Diazogruppen. Die Pfropfpolymerisation verläuft in heterogener Phase nach dem für radikalische Polymerisationen bekannten Zeitgesetz in 1. Ordnung bezüglich Monomerkonzentration und ist beendet, wenn initiierende Radikale infolge von Rekombinationen oder sterischer Hinderung an der SiO2‐Oberfläche die Polymerisation nicht mehr auslösen können.Der kovalente Charakter der Bindung zwischen Polymerem und Siliciumdioxid wird IR‐spektroskopisch und durch Adsorptions‐Desorptions‐Versuche nachgewiesen. Die durch die radikalische Polyreaktion an der Oberfläche gebundene Menge an Polymerem ist um eine bis zwei Größenordnungen größer als die irreversibel adsorptiv gebundene. AbstractHeterogeneous polymerization was employed to prepare macroporous copolymers from glycidyl methacrylate with ethylene dimethacrylate. Conditions of the formation of the macroporous structure were defined (content of the crosslinking agent, portion of the inert phase, stirring intensity), and properties of the copolymers prepared, such as specific surface, pore volume, heat resistance, and content of reactive epoxy groups, were studied. This polymer reacts even under moderate conditions with both mineral and carboxylic acids, amines, amino acids, etc. The resulting polymers find wide applications.

AbstractA detailed study of the shrinkage behaviour of homopolymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile has been made. Apart from chemical shrinkage, a physical shrinkage, which is independent of temperature and oxidizing gas was observed. This shrinkage occurs even at temperatures below 180°C. The effect of temperature and oxidizing gas on the chemical shrinkage is reported. The shrinkage is faster in the presence of O2than in presence of air and N2, This chemical shrinkage can be checked with smaller loads in case of oxygen as compared to the loads required in case of air and nitrogen. The effect of load on shrinkage in presence of oxygen is reported. By use of oxygen, a maximum elongation of 65% can be achieved as compared to 40% maximum elongation reported in the literature. An empirical method has been described which can be used for the estimation of optimum peroxidation time at any temperature
