AbstractUrea canal complexes with hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and hexanediol monoacrylate (HDMA) were formed within very short time only by mixing and at relatively high temperature, at 25°C. These canal complexes were more stable even at higher temperatures than those canal complexes including short chain monomers such as acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and 1,3‐butadiene.The rate of polymerization increased with increasing temperature. The radicals were trapped in the canal even at 25°C and the radicals caused a post‐polymerization when the temperature was elevated to values near the decomposition temperature of the canal complex, although the post‐polymerization in well‐known canal complexes occurred only at low temperature. During polymerization, the crystal lattice of the canal was destroyed and the polymerization reaction proceeded around the destroyed canal. AbstractVarious second monomers are trailed into a canal when long chain monomers, such as hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) or hexanediol monoacrylate (HDMA) form canal complexes with urea. This is called a trailing effect. The relatively small monomer molecules as second monomers were more easily trailed into the canals by HDDA or HDMA than relatively large size monomer molecules. The trailing effect of HDDA was larger than that HDMA.HDDA and various monomers trailed into canal complexes copolymerized easily by γ‐ray irradiation. In case of in‐source copolymerization, copolymer yields were larger than those of polymerization of HDDA only in canal. AbstractOptical luminescence of amorphous bright poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films and the changes in luminescence due to certain morphological changes have been studies at 77 K to identify the luminescent centres in this polymer. The emission spectrum consists of both fluorescence and phosphorescence with distinct band peaks at 304, 326, 365 nm corresponding to fluorescence and at 426, 453, 476 nm corresponding to phosphorescence. Comparison of the PET emission spectrum with that one from dimethyl terephthalate microcrystals indicates that the emitter in the polymer is most probably the basic terephthalate unit. Polarized absorption and emission studies in oriented and unoriented PET films also support this observation. Change in the relative intensity distribution on changing the crystallinity of the film suggests that each of the 304, 326 and 365 nm fluorescence bands arises from different environments of the emitting centre. AbstractEs wird die Darstellung eines neuen aliphatisch‐aromatischen Polyäthersulfons, das durch Polykondensation von Bis‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐sulfon mit Bis‐(4‐chlormethylphenyl)‐methan entsteht, beschrieben. Die Reaktionen wurden in hochsiedenden polaren Lösungsmitteln bei Anwendung äquimolarer Mengen an Substraten und eines 15‐proz. molaren überschusses von Kaliumcarbonat als HCl‐Akzeptor durchgeführt. Um den Polykondensationsprozeß zu optimieren, wurde der Einfluß folgender Parameter untersucht: Reaktionstemperatur, Reaktionszeit, Konzentration der Lösung und Art des Lösungsmittels. Als Vergleichsparameter, um die Eigenschaften der erhaltenen Polykondensate zu bewerten, wurden die Grenzviskosität und das mittlere Molekulargewicht (M̄w) herangezogen. Das erhaltene Polykondensat besitzt in Abhängigkeit von den Reaktionsbedingungen ein mittleres Molekulargewicht von 600–56000. Die Struktur des aliphatisch‐aromatischen Polyäthersulfons wurde durch Elementaranalyse und IR‐Spektralanlyse bestimmt. AbstractThe curing reaction of furan resins was monitored through the exothermic heat of reaction by means of a simple technique. p‐Toluene sulphonic acid dissolved in acetone was used to catalyse the curing reaction. A ‘cure rate index’, defined as the maximum temperature rise per unit time per unit mass of the resin, was used as a measure of the rate of cure. The index value increases exponentially with the catalyst concentration. Interestingly, for the same catalyst concentration the index value also increases significantly with the period of ageing of the catalyst solution. A method is developed for deriving the activation energy for the curing reaction from the exothermic heat data for non‐isothermal cure. The activation energy is found to increase with resin viscosity and to decrease exponentially with increasing catalyst concentration. AbstractIn einem vernetzten Polymeren wird ein Stäbchen aus Weicheisen einem magnetischen Feld ausgestzt. Es wird eine Orientierung des Stäbchens im Feld bewirkt. Der Drehwinkel α nimmt mit zunehmender Netzwerkdichte ab. Während einer Vernetzungsreaktion wird die Messung von α mit konstantem Drehmoment nach unterschiedlichen Reaktionszeiten ausgeführt. Damit ist eine kinetische Untersuchung der Vernetzungsreaktion durchführbar. Im experimentellen Beispiel wird die Vernetzung von Naturkautschuk (cis‐1,4‐Polyisopren) mit Dicumylperoxid untersucht. AbstractThe crosslinking of atactic and isotactic polypropylene initiated by organic peroxides in presence of diallyl maleate or pentaerythrityl tetramethacrylate was studied. The influence of concentration of the components of the crosslinking system as well as the effect of temperature and reaction time was followed. For high yield of gel, a high rate of initiation is necessary. Also the rate of reaction of double bonds must be similar to the rate of peroxide decomposition.
