Although responsible for five deaths per day in the United Kingdom, the pathophysiology behind the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sids) remains unknown. Not surprisingly, therefore, attempts have been made to prevent deaths by empirical methods. With the hypothesis that a cessation of breathing or a slowing of heart rate will occur prior to death from any cause, monitors to detect these changes have been developed and used on infants thought to be at increased risk of SIDS. The hypothesis presumes that by the time such changes are detected by the monitor there will be adequate time to resuscitate the infant without irreversible damage, and that infants at high risk of Sids can be identified.

A new, inexpensive commercial infant respiration monitor, the Baby-sitter by Direct Diagnostics Ltd, has been evaluated and subjected to clinical trial. Dual respiration recordings were made from infants exhibiting apnoeic episodes to compare the new monitor with an acceptable reference monitor (Graesby Medical Model MR10). Both monitors are designed to detect respiration movement by means of pressure pulses produced in an air-filled sensor attached to the infant's abdomen. The new monitor is found to have unacceptable Performance.

Femoral stem failure in total hip replacement is uncommon. It tends to occur predominantly in males over 1.8 m in height and over 76 kg in weight. Poor or inadequate cementing technique may lead to cement failure, which may be seen as roentgenographic lucencies present by as much as 12 months prior to actual stem failure. This article reports on a case of double stem failure, together with a full metallurgical examination, which indicated loosening of the implant prior to eventual failure from overload. Although one of the fractures occurred across an area of relative weakness in the stem material, this was not felt to be the principal cause of failure.

The construction and validation of a computerized device to test simple reaction time and decision-making time is dimmed. The device is required to demonstrate repeatability (consistency of response times from human subjects) across replications of the same experimental condition. A second requirement of the device is that it must separately and independently measure simple reaction time and the time it takes lo process one bit of information The concepts behind the construction of the box are discussed, as well ad the design of its internal circuits to achieve these specifications.

A simple rig for obtaining stress radiographic measurements of the knee is presented. Lateral instability (varus), medial (valgus), anterior and posterior (drawer), as well as rotatory instability can be measured. The rig works by means of weights over pulleys, and the same forces are applied as when using a hydraulically-operated machine.The rig is small and inexpensive. The evaluation of surgical diathermy units is being undertaken for the DHSS by the staff of the Bioengineering Unit at Cardiff Royal Infirmary.‘Health Equipment Information’No. 139, published in April 1985, contains evaluation reports on five surgical diathermy units, the Birtcher Hyfrecator 733-2, the Erbe Erbotom T71D, the KeyMed KBS-50, the Valleylab Surgistat, and the wolf. 2175.
