It has been recognized for many years that the electromagnetic (EM) environment within aircraft presents a potential hazard to the subject with a pacemaker. Most of the information currently available is, however, several years old and may not be strictly relevant to modern pacemakers and the electromagnetic environment found in today's civil aircraft [I and 2]. In mid 1986 it was therefore decided to investigate the effect on a number of currently available unipolar pacemakers of typical levels of electromagnetic interference encountered in civil aircraft.

In intravenous therapy, gravity-fed drip controllers regulate the flow of fluid in terms of drops per minute, though the total amount of fluid to be in fused is specified in ml/h. To convert from one to the other it is regularly, erroneously, assumed that drop size is constant. The work described here investigates the relationship of drop size with respect to drip rate and fluid properties. The results are presented in an easy-to-use graphical form.

The risks of infection in servicing medical and hospital laboratory equipment are reviewed. Recommended procedures and precautions for dealing with these risks are detailed. These are based upon the practice adopted in the authors’own department. A‘permit to work’scheme is not felt to be universally applicable and the guiding criteria to judge any applied procedure are set down.

As part of the continuing comparative evaluation programme of medical equipment sponsored by the UK Health Departments, the evaluation of dialysis equipment is being carried out within the University of Sheffield. Safety and performance assessments are carried out by the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, and incorporate the results of testing by the Medical Equipment Laboratory of the British Standards Institution. User assessment was carried out in hospitals in the Sheffield Health Authority.The following is a review of Health Equipment Information (HEI) number 182, published in March 1988. It is the sixth in the series and contains evaluation reports on a further four haemodialysis systems. These are the Drake Willock 480, the Fresenius A1008D, and the Organon Teknika Redy 2000.The following is intended as a simple guide to choosing equipment suitable for haemodialysis, and may not take into account particular user requirements.
