The coherence function quantifies the association between pairs of signals as a function of frequency and has been shown to be useful for measuring changes in EEG topography related to cognitive tasks, psychopathology, and other aspects of brain organisation. For a narrow frequency band, its magnitude is analogous to the correlation coefficient between the signals limited by that band, but its value may differ because of the way that smoothing over frequency is achieved The coherence function is described in physical terms using simple waveforms.

Non-invasive impedance cardiography has been used to assess cardiac response to postural stress in old people but the results have been conflicting. We have statistically studied the responses of two groups of elderly people (healthy and with postural hypotension) and compared results with those obtained in a young group of controls. We conclude that with suitable precautions this inexpensive method is both reproducible and satisfactory in practice.

An enzyme can be combined with an electrochemical sensor to produce an electrode that will measure the substrate for that enzyme. Such electrodes, known as enzyme electrodes, have enabled assay of many compounds of biochemical interest. However, they remain largely unexploited in medical measurement. This review gives the basic principles and describes electrodes used in biological solutions, together with an outline of the problems. The development of enzyme electrodes for continuous in vivo monitoring is emphasised.

Haemoglobin concentration and its saturation with oxygen and carbon monoxide were estimated in identical blood samples using an automared two-wavelength photometer (the Radiometer OSM2) and standard methods. The instrument was easy to operate and maintain and, in general, was accurate and repeatable. A t carboxyhaemoglobin levels below 1.5%, however, the precision of the instrument was poor.
