Measurement of myocardial blood flow and assessment of coronary calibre in man has important clinical and research, value. An inexpensive microcomputer system has been developed to facilitate analysis of each of these. Coronary sinus and great cardiac vein blood flow are measured using the thermodilution technique. The output of the temperature measurement circuitry is digitized and used to calculate blood flows. For coronary artery calibre measurement, the outline of an arterial segment recorded during coronary arteriography is digitized manually. The microcomputer system provides a graphic display of the digitized artery and calculates diameters throughout its length. Excellent correlations were observed between computer and manual methods for both systems.

A new technique using a pre-calibrated magnetometer has been used to investigate the stability of the human body. Transducer coils were attached to a belt which was worn by the subject. Sway was measured over 30 s periods with eyes open and eyes closed. For 10 normal subjects, the mean sway speed was 3-6±0-9 mm/s with eyes open, and 53±1-5 mm/s with eyes closed. The mean ratio for eyes open to eyes closed was 0-68±0-10. The test was simple to perform and gave reproducible results.

The diffusion of instruments for ambulatory monitoring is rapidly expanding and the related cost to the European Community is increasing, while their role and their effectiveness are still controversial. The Biomedical Engineering Group, belonging to the Committee for Medical Research of the European Community, has approved a project for the co-ordination of the research (concerted action) in the field of ambulatory monitoring, to tackle the problem. The project, directed by a Project Management Group, following some meetings of experts being organized to identify high-priority goals, has been aimed at promoting common efforts in two specific fields: evaluation of the quality of ECG ambulatory monitoring analysers, by means of a standard reference, and assessment of the performance of non-invasive techniques for arterial blood pressure ambulatory monitoring.In its first six months (July-December 1985) the project has produced: (1) a preliminary agreement about ECG recording and an annotation scheme, to be definitely adopted, after a pilot experiment, by June 1986; (2) a protocol for hypertensive patient characterization and data collection, to be initiated by September 1986.

‘Health Equipment Information’, No. 147, published in October 1985, is the fifth in the series dealing with infusion pumps and contains evaluation reports on five volumetric devices. These are the Braun Infusomat Secura, the Ivac 560, the Ivac Neo-mate 565, the Travenol 6100 and the Travenol 8000.Technical performance assessment was carried out at the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering, and user assessment undertaken at various hospitals within the Bath District Health Authority.

As part of the continuing programme of evaluation of medical equipment sponsored by the UK Health Departments, the evaluation of dialysis and ancillary equipment is being carried out within the University of Sheffield, under the direction of Professor M. M. Black.‘Health Equipment Information’Number 148, published in December 1985, carries full reports on the Cobe Centry 2Rx haemodialysis system with double blood pump module (DBPM), the Lucas Medical 2100 haemodialysis system, and the Permutit Series 8 water softener. It also contains summaries of full reports on the Organon-Teknika Sorbsystem and Cordis-Dow Seratron haemodialysis systems, and the Gordonsal RD500 and Elga Mediro D water softeners, which were published in HEV 136. Readers should note that the Cordis Seratron and Lucas 2100 models are no longer available in the UK. Extracts of the evaluations of the Cobe Centry 2Rx + DBPM and the Permutit Series B models, together with summaries and overall comparisons, are given below.
