摘要:
The beneficial aspects of electrosurgical cutting and coagulating techniques are nearly too numerous to list. The major contribution and electrosurgery has been to drastically reduce both blood loss and operative time resulting in reduced morbidity and mortality. There are, as well, procedures which would not be possible without electrosurgery. Nonetheless, as a source of high energy in the operating theatre, there are hazards attendant to the use of electrosurgery. Moreover, since high frequency signals are involved, the nature of the machine-patient interactions creating a potentially hazardous situation many not be easily identifiable. The significant hazards of electrosurgery in use are: explosions of combustible mixtures including anaesthesia gas and bowel gas; interference with instruments and pacemakers; stimulation of excitable tissues which on occasion has apparently caused ventricular fibrillation; and accidental radiofrequency burns. Though the rate of incidents is low–in terms of the number per 100000 procedures–individual accidents tend to be fairly catastrophic and traumatic to both the patient and surgical team. Frequently, litigation results from these accidents. Thouth the hazards cannot be eliminated, the probability of an incident can be minimized by careful technique.

摘要:
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging has progressed rapidly from laboratory curiosity to commercial exploitation and clinical application in the space of only three years. The physical principles underlying the technique are described and the equipment requirements outlined. The question of optimal magnetic field strength is discussed.

摘要:
Editors’note: This is the first of a series of articles on the 17 projects in the European Community's biomedical engineering programme. Dr Podo is Project Leader for‘Imaging techniques—nuclear magnetic resonance’; the project's objectives being‘the identification and characterization of biological tissues by NMR. Methods of operation are the development of standardized methods for measuring NMR relaxation properties; the development of test objects; collection of NMR relaxation data and associated histopathological and biochemical information; and assessment of the safety of NMR in clinical use’. The Community's full programme, together with an explanation of the history and organisation of the EC, was described in our last issue (Vol. 9, No. 2, p. 61) by Jan E. W. Beneken, B. H. Brown and W. Skupinski.

摘要:
When recording pattern visual evoked potentials it is important that the overall luminance of the pattern and the relative luminance of the pattern elements (for example checks or bars) are maintained at a constant level. This paper describes a low-cost battery-powered instrument designed and constructed to measure the luminance of specific areas of the screen on which the pattern is projected.

摘要:
As part of the continuing evaluation programme of medical equipment sponsored by the UK Health Departments, the evaluation of patient monitors is being carried out within the Northern Regional Health Authority.‘Health Equipment Information’No. 134, published in December 1984, contains evaluation reports, on a further four monitors. The Albury Life-Trace 24 and the Cardiac Recorders CR9 are reviewed in full, while the Honeywell CM 120 and the Kontron 128A in summary form only as they are now no longer available. Only the first two will be considered here. For full details of the evaluation findings readers should consult‘HEl’134 (see above)–the following are extracts from the report.
