The establishment by the British Parliament in July 1980 of the Supply Council as a special Health Authority is a unique decision to create a health authority for a particular function, and is the first such statutory body for supplies ever constituted in the United Kingdom. It effectively predetermines change in the National Health Service (NHS) for a function which has, during the life of the NHS, been the subject of six organizational reports. None of which, in the view of various governments and indeed of professional supplies officers and others within the NHS, achieved the efficiency required to obtain best value for the financial resource employed in the acquisition of goods, which for 1981 and 1982 is valued at approximately $1600 million per annum.

A group of 53 adult men, normal subjects as well as victims of different types of lower-extremity handicaps, took part in tachographic gait studies and measurements of physiological energy expenditure whilst walking at a self-selected pace. The observations were analysed to explore the relationships between walking energy expenditure and various gait parameters. This analysis allowed the authors to identify some biomechanical indices which can be used for objective evaluations of human performance in locomotion. The investigation reported in this paper is a follow-up to the authors’pilot study which was published in an earlier issue of'JMET.

The use of radio-telemetry to monitor physiological variables is now an accepted part of routine hospital practice. There are other areas of health care, particularly in the field of industrial medicine, where telemetry may be used to advantage. The use of such a system for ECG monitoring in the presence of high-intensity electric fields is described.

As part of the continuing comparative evaluation of medical equipment sponsored by the UK Health Departments, an evaluation of electrocardiographs is being carried out within the Oxford Regional Health Authority. Safety and performance assessments are being made by the Regional Engineer's Department and user assessments are being carried out at a number of hospitals within the Region.Recently, details of a further four instruments have been released (‘Health Equipment Information [H/], No. 107, {October 1982’]). These are the Cambridge VS-550, the Fukuda Denshi FD-13, the Cardisuny 501F, and the Kirby Lester ECG 30. Earlier‘HEFs (No. 91 published in March 1981 and No. 100 published in April 1982) contained the results of the evaluation of eight other electrocardiographs, seven of which are still on the market in the UK. Instruments covered were the Cambridge T5-E, Hewlett-Packard's 1500B, the Nihon Kohden5151E, the Philips CR100, the Hellige Simpliscriptor EK13, the San Ei IE 21, and the Siemens Cardiostat 701; the Evaluation Summaries section of'HEF 107 also contains updated references to the other ECG recorders still on the market.Please note that the following material is Crown Copyright; the editors are grateful to the DHSSfor permission to publish this.

This article summarizes the report of the evaluation of some pressure transducers, which was published in July 1982 in‘Health Equipment Information’105.The report, the second in a series covering a number of blood-pressure transducers, is an evaluation of three conventional transducers, two wrist-watch style transducers and three miniature transducers. Catheter-tip devices are not included. The evaluation was carried out by Dr R. H. Smallwood of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK. The report commences with an overall comparison of the transducers, which covers the type of dome, the method of cleaning, the method of excitation and comments on the durability of the transducers. This is followed by a table showing the specification of the transducers, as claimed by the manufacturers. The specifications have been converted to a common system of units to allow a direct comparison to be made. The next section gives an individual report on each transducer, headed by a photograph of the transducer on a grid scale, and followed by the manufacturer's comments. A table showing the results of the evaluation is followed by an appendix outlining the philosophy behind the standards which have been used, and giving details of the test methods. The appendix is reprinted, with minor alterations, from R. H. Using a microcomputer as the core of a monitoring or other clinical instrument is an attractive idea in principle. With the operating characteristics principally defined in software which can be altered or replicated easily and cheaply, the major part of the capital investment is in hardware that can be reused in many different applications.Costing around±400-00 the BBC Model B microcomputer provides a combination of hardware and software facilities that with marketing and product support of comparable quality could make the idea a practicable and cost-effective one for a range of clinical instrumentation tasks.

This article describes the design and implementation of a microcomputer-controlled experimental rig for psychoacoustical testing in a clinical setting. Firstly, the role of psychoacoustical tests in clinical audiology is reviewed briefly. Some common test procedures are described. The requirements of the hardware and software are outlined together with their realization. Finally, the performance of the system and its usefulness are noted.
