Since 1975 four-channel ambulatory monitoring has been available as a technique for prolonged EEG recording in an unrestricted environment. This increases EEG sampling time so that attacks can be recorded and enables the differentiation of epileptic and non-epileptic attacks. In recent years an eight-channel system has become available which provides greater scalp coverage and allows better localization of attacks and EEG abnormalities. Four-channel recording has been widely used to assess the efficacy of anticonvulsant medication in patients with absence seizures. It has also been used to investigate the effect of the environment on discharges, as well as any circadian variations in discharges. Ambulatory monitoring provides a useful alternative to sleep recording in the laboratory, both for the detection of abnormalities during sleep and for experimental sleep studies. Automated analysis techniques have so far been confined to the analysis of spike and wave activity and to the scoring of sleep stages.

As decreased foetal movement (FM) may indicate impaired foetal health, FM recording has been suggested as a method of assessing foetal well-being. A non-intrusive, automated method of recording FM (FM-detector), was compared with maternal and ultrasonographic assessment ofFMs in 24 women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The FM-detector detected a greater proportion of ultrasonographically recorded FMs than the mothers did (median 70% and38%, respectively; p<0-001). Parity, gestational age, placental site or thickness, maternal weight or the distance from the maternal abdominal surface to the amniotic cavity did not affect the ability of the FM-detector to detect ultrasonographically recorded FMs. The estimation of FM strength by the FM-detector agreed fairly well with the assessment of FM strength by the ultrasound observer. The FM-detector would seem suitable for clinical use, as in the examination of pregnant women complaining of feeling‘less FM’.

The design described in this paper arose from the need of a polio victim to be able to feed himself The patient was confined to a wheelchair. His right arm was completely paralysed, but he had limited ability to move his left arm. The arm balancer described allows the patient to swing his left arm freely in a horizontal plane, and also enables him to move his arm vertically, with power assistance under his own control.

The equipment described allows the accuracy of a syringe pump to be tested quickly and conveniently. A digital micrometer assembly clips in place of the disposable syringe and transmits readings to a separate unit which displays flow rates in ml/h. Initial readings of pump output are given in 30 s, with readings to a higher accuracy within 4 min.

As part of the continuing medical equipment evaluation programme sponsored by the UK Health Departments, the evaluation of resuscitators is being carried out in the Department of Anaesthetics, University of Wales College of Medicine, under the direction of Professor M. D. As part of the continuing comparative evaluation programme of electromedical equipment sponsored by the UK Health Departments, the evaluation of cardiotocographs is being carried out for the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) by the Bio-Medical Technology Group in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London W2.The following report is based on extracts from‘Health Equipment Information’Number 156, published in July 1986 which contains evaluation reports on three further cardiotocographs. These are the Hewlett-Packard 8040A, the Huntleigh M2000 Mkll and the Kontron Fetasonde 5. The basis for inclusion in this evaluation was that each cardiotocograph has both internal and external modes of detecting foetal heart rate and uterine activity, and can be used for both intrapartum and antenatal monitoring.
