A new product must meet an ever-increasing number of requirements to be acceptable for the consumer, whether the product is to be marketed within the country of manufacture or exported. The requirements often vary between the consumers and between countries. The paper discusses the formalised requirements for medical electrical and hospital laboratory equipment. The British Standards Institution's Test House has recently been formally recognised by the Department of Health&Social Security for testing such equipment to HTM8 and ESCHLE.

As a mass produced device which can be programmed according to application, the microprocessor is an obvious choice of component in hospital instrumentation for a wide range of activities from routine surveillance and process control to individual research projects. Until recently the development of an instrument from the naked processor has often proved to be labour intensive with control over both cost and timescale from design to completion difficult to maintain. Difficulties are frequently experienced in the areas of providing suitable communication channels for both data collection and immediate information for the operator and mass data storage. In our view, the arrival of the PET on the scene, as an example of a microprocessor based package including keyboard, video display, flexible 1/0 ports, simple tape recorder and high level programming language has opened up new opportunities for those wishing to use microprocessors without tears.This paper describes how the authors have confirmed this view by successfully using the PET in particular data logging application. Design philosophy is discussed and gives an estimation of the limitations imposed on an approach using PET.

This article outlines an evaluatory study of kerb negotiation in a conventional wheelchair and a prototype diamond configuration, lever articulated wheelchair. The kerb negotiation sequence in both models is presented with the results of tests involving users able to negotiate kerbs (N = 16); users unable to negotiate kerbs (N = 15); and non-wheelchair users (N = 20). Results indicate preferences for the prototype amongst the first group, particularly for kerb descent. Free rolling tests of the loaded wheelchairs over various terrains revealed that while the standard wheelchair invariably turned downhill the prototype was relatively insensitive to loss of direction on sideslopes. A significant number of subjects (P = 0.01, N = 20) found the articulated framework of the prototype reduced the difficulties of self propulsion over rough and cambered surfaces.The prototype was found to possess a smaller turning circle (103 cm to 122 cm) and a longer wheelbase (94.7 cm to 39.7 cm) than the standard model though overall dimensions were broadly comparable. The implications of the prototype wheelbase for manual, attendant and powered propulsion are considered.

The existing locomotion evaluation techniques are based either on bioenergetic measurements or on biomechanical principles and procedures. While the former basis has been preferred by a few, published literature in this field has contained more information on the latter. No significant work combining both the approaches in a single measurement system is known so far.This paper reports an investigation where an attempt was made to combine both the techniques in relation to a mixed handicapped population composed of 10 test subjects as well as a matching control group. It has been found from the present investigation that the combined application of the above two types of measurements might lead to more useful information about the performance level of the subjects in locomotion.Further, the statistical analysis of the experimental data revealed the existance of a linear correlationship among the parameters used for such performance evaluation. Finally, the study findings have been discussed to indicate how the biomechanical measurements alone can throw sufficient light on the subject's locomotor status.
