摘要:
We believe that the debate on the impact of technology on modern medicine, recently enlivened by the rapid increase in both the demand for and the cost of‘high technology’medicine, will be enhanced by the publication of a series of authoritative papers on this topic. We invited the Presidents of the United Kingdom Royal Colleges of Medicine (or their nominees) each to contribute an article on the impact of technology in their own specialist fields. The first in the series is published in this issue. Two further articles will be published in the next issue of the Journal and others in subsequent issues.

摘要:
A small, flexible catheter-tip pH electrode has been developed for continuous measurement of intravascular pH in man and animals. The electrode utilises a pH sensitive polymer membrane rather than pH glass. The electrode passes through the lumen of a conventional cardiac catheter, by which it may be introduced to any desired site in the circulation. The electrode has no cross-sensitivity to other ions, to osmolality or oxygen tension. It is insensitive to flow and pressure. The response time is less than 300 ms, and the mean driftin vivois 0.01 pH units/h. Continuous recordings of intravascular pH in animals have been made for up to Th. The electrodes can be sterilised, and have been used in man.

摘要:
The necessary properties of plastic materials for use in a method of foot pressure distribution measurements have been assessed, and the mechanisms in operation at an illuminated plastic to glass interface underload have been investigated. A hypothesis is given of the physical principles upon which the operation of this technique is based and it is shown that a calibrated analysis of both the static and dynamic distribution of pressure under the foot is possible by this technique.
