摘要:
Electro-medical servicing in the National Health Service has been provided at varying standards and by differing organisations throughout the country. Typical organisations are examined. A number of workable schemes have appeared, but the necessity for co-operation of various groups of staff is evident. Such schemes must be tailored to fit local clinical requirements and to optimise local resources. Any service must include adequate record-keeping, safety testing, calibration, and routine and breakdown maintenance. The services of the manufacturer may be involved at any or all stages, together with careful monitoring of costs. The provision of technical advice to assist in the selection of new equipment, and acceptance testing of that equipment on delivery are valuable. It becomes increasingly important to ensure that modern technology is used to effect an improvement in patient care.

The penetration of science and technology into medicine opens new horizons for this branch of knowledge and leads both the doctor and the engineer to engage in a closer dialogue. This explains the recent development of biomedical engineering courses in French engineering schools and universities. The relevant courses are described and the problems of employment in the profession are considered. In the present difficult economic situation openings are limited, but it is hoped that, if the needs filled by and the efficacy of this training are taken into consideration, the situation will improve.

摘要:
An instrumentation system and an improved methodology for the automatic measurement and real-time evaluation of man's postural equilibrium parameters have been developed. The system is based on the principle that the mechanical oscillations of man's physiologic gravicentre†can be translated into electrical signals, which can be recorded and analysed. The apparatus consists of an electronic platform which continuously measures the location of the physiologic gravicentre in a horizontal plane, and a circuit which reduces these measurements to quantitative indices of the postural equilibrium and displays them in numerical form immediately after the test is completed. A utomatic measurements, real-time evaluation of both amplitude and frequency of body oscillations, and operational simplicity are essential features of this instrumentation. The system could be used in various specialized disciplines, such as clinical medicine, otorhinolaryngology, industrial, aerospace and undersea medicine, as well as sports physiologic research.

摘要:
This paper describes a method for obtaining temporal patterns of foot/floor contact during walking. A system primarily designed to obtain the temporal / distance factors of gait is the basis of the method. The importance of data presentation is stressed and a novel graphical method of displaying the patterns of foot contact is shown. Examples of normal and certain pathological gaits are presented.

摘要:
The forced oscillation technique has recently been modified for use in children. The technique involves a child breathing an oscillating airflow at the resonant frequency of the respiratory tract. At this frequency, the reactive components of respiratory impedance are equal and opposite in sign, and it is therefore possible to measure directly the resistive component of respiratory impedance. This is known as the total respiratory resistance. Full descriptions of the theory, apparatus and method involved in the technique are given with a discussion of the common artefacts encountered. Examples of typical clinical applications are included to illustrate the usefulness of the technique.

Endocrine research is frequently dogged by the problem of the signal, in this case hormone level, fluctuating at a frequency at least as fast, if not faster, than the sampling frequency; a situation that would be considered unacceptable in other areas of science. Continuous blood sampling offers a means by which this problem may be circumvented. The technique is illustrated, and its results discussed, together with statistical techniques which have been designed to handle and analyse the repetitive serial data that is obtained by such sampling.
