The “method of recognition memory” is considered as a procedure which permits the examination of the identification of elementary auditory displays without requiring the assignment of arbitrary designations to the displays. The procedure is described and illustrative results are presented.

In normal ears, threshold intensity as a function of the duration of a tonal pulse is determined. Identical results are obtained by a reciprocal determination. The reciprocal determination is made by fixing the intensity level at specified points above reference threshold to measure thetime threshold. The duration‐intensity relationship reveals a marked dependency upon frequency; the differences observed are equivalent to the alteration of loudness function for the various test frequencies. A new measure ofloudness increment degree, as well as conversion of decibel values into phon and sone values, indicates a close relationship between time threshold and loudness sensation. Therefore, the relationship between pulse duration and loudness level presents no artifacts reflecting frequency‐dependent changes. The time threshold (Tmsec), as a fraction of pulse durationrethe “adjusting time” of the auditory mechanism (150/T), seems to indicate the loudness of related levels above threshold in sones. General conclusions deriving from these relationships and some limitations of their applicability are discussed in detail; these are confirmed by a comparison between monaural and binaural time‐threshold measurements.

摘要:
A novel principle has been developed, applicable to folded horns, for improving the acoustic transmission around bends having a radius greater than one‐quarter wavelength. This consists of the use of a conoidal reflecting type surface in the outer half of the fold. It is beneficial in the frequency‐special region between the usual horn wave expansion action and transmission by specular or optical type reflection. A practical application is described.

摘要:
The calculations of a previous paper, which were based on a simplification in that the effective elastic properties of each grain were described by just Lamé's two elastic constants, are generalized to take into account the fact that an elastically anisotropic medium has actually several independent elastic constants. The final expressions for the attenuation coefficient of shear and dilatational waves exhibit qualitatively similar features as the corresponding expressions of the previous paper but differ quantitatively from them.
