摘要:
A theory is presented of the scattering of underwater sound by the sea surface. The Neumann‐Pierson oceanographic model of the sea is used. These developments are applied to propagation in an isothermal surface‐bounded channel. A theoretical curve is presented of surface loss vs the rms wave height and frequency product at the lower end of the curve.

It has been suggested that the nervous system of the ear is capable of identifying the periodicity of a complex sound, as such, isolated from other factors. Because many phenomena in hearing have their counterparts in the vibratory sensations of the skin, the question is analyzed whether the skin also is able to identify and isolate periodicity of the stimulus. Since a phenomenon described by Seebeck 100 years ago seems to provide the best demonstration of periodicity perception in hearing, an analogous phenomenon the skin has been investigated for both mechanical and electrical stimulation. The skin too showed the Seebeck phenomenon. But it became obvious that on the skin it is possible to change the periodicity without altering the “pitch sensation” or to change the pitch sensation without having modified the periodicity. The pitch sensation for complex sounds and complex vibrations is probably not a simple process.

The anterior inferior cerebellar artery of guinea pigs was occluded, thereby interrupting the blood supply to the cochlea. Durations of occlusion ranged from 1 through 60 min. Cochlear microphonics, summating potential, action potential, and endocochlear potential were recorded before, during, and subsequent to occlusion. The differential effect of anoxia on the various potentials was observed, as well as the appearance of the large negative dc potential in scala media as anoxia progressed. For the brief occlusion durations, the amplitudes of all potentials except cochlear microphonics became greater than normal soon after the blood supply returned. Even for the longer anoxic intervals, the summating potential and the endocochlear potential exhibited super‐normality during the recovery process.

It is found that in the frequency range below 1000 cps, an approximately constant frequencydifference(11–14 cps) is needed to obtain a just noticeable interaural difference in pitch; between 1000 and 1500 cps the limen rapidly increases. At 1500 cps, it amounts to some 60–75 cps, or 4–5%. Thepercentagesensitivity then remains constant up to some 2400 cps. Between 2400 and 3000 cps there is a second sharp rise of the limen, which reaches a value of 300 cps (or 10%) at the latter frequency. Between 3000 and 8000 cps, the percentage sensitivity remains constant at about 10%.

摘要:
An application of statistical detection theory to automatic speech recognition is presented. The multiple discriminant function approach is applied to the problem of vowel recognition. Twenty‐one speakers, 10 females and 11 males, produced 215 single vowel words, exemplifying ten different vowels. The linear discriminant function correctly labeled 87% of the utterances; the quadratic discriminant function correctly labeled 94%. It is pointed out that these detections were achieved without use of duration information and without explicit use of formant information.
