Temporal resolution, as defined by the minimum detectable gap between successive tonal pulses, was observed to decrease as a direct function of both the frequency disparity between successive pulses and the duration of the pulses. An interaction between frequency disparity and pulse duration was also observed.

Sets of synthetic vowel sounds which differed in first‐formant frequency, second‐formant frequency, and duration were presented to a group of listeners for identification. It was found that listeners' judgments depended on all of these factors. Duration was a relatively more important cue for vowels located in the center of theF1‐F2 space where a vowel might more readily be confused with one of its neighbors. The perceived duration of a vowel was found to be biased by the rhythm of the sounds that preceded it. In the case of sounds lying near perceptual boundaries, this was sometimes sufficient to change the identity of the vowel.

The study was done to determine the importance of CV and VC formant transitions in the identification of place of consonant production. Syllables made up from consonants (/p,t,k,b,d,g,f,s,∫,v,z,ȝ/) and the /ə/ vowel were recorded and spliced so that the noise portions were eliminated from the CV and VC formant transitions. Seventeen undergraduate students were asked to identify the formant transitions as labial, alveolor, palatal, or no consonant. Analysis of the results indicated that: (1) the number of correct identifications was considerably greater than chance for all sounds except voiceless stops; (2) there were significantly more correct identifications made of VC than of CV formant transitions; (3) there were no significant differences between fricatives and stops; (4) there were significantly more correct identifications of voiced than of voiceless consonants; and (5) there was significant variation related to place of consonant articulation. The best explanation for the findings related to CV vs VC formant transitions appeared to be that elimination of the noise from the transitions reduced the span of the articulatory movements included in the CV formant transition so that it was less sufficient than the VC formant transition for consonant identification.

Auditory evoked responses to pure‐tone stimuli were examined in guinea pigs, with chronically implanted electrodes on the dura mater, by means of the summing computer technique. Two distinct response patterns differing in waveshape, latency, association with the pinna reflex, habituation, and threshold were noted. The first, called the Preyer reflex evoked response (PRER) because it tended to occur in association with the pinna reflex, was a myogenic response. The second was a neurogenic potential called the evoked cortical response (ECR). The ECR response was resistant to habituation and present at low intensities of approximately the same level as those reported by behavioral investigation. Once PRER habituation had occurred, myogenic contamination was no longer a hazard in dural recordings.

摘要:
The attenuation of low‐frequency external sound by MX41/AR earphone cushions appears greater when measured by the threshold‐shift method than when measured by an objective real‐ear method. It is suggested that the objective measurements have greater validity, because threshold‐shift measurements are subject to the influence of masking by earphone‐induced physiological noise.

摘要:
Subglottal air pressure measures obtained as subjects uttered VCV syllables containing /p/ and /b/ showed no significant differences between the two consonants. It was concluded that regardless of which stop was to be produced the respiratory system provided an undifferentiated driving force to be acted upon by the laryngeal and supralaryngeal structures.
