A pitch‐synchronous analysis was carried out over the vowel portions of the CVC utterances HAYED, HOD, HODE and the sentence FEW THIEVES ARE NEVER SENT TO THE JUG recorded by a male speaker. For every pitch period, the analysis provides formant frequencies and the waveform of the vocal‐cord excitation. The excitation waveform was replaced by a simulated excitation waveform, with which the utterances were resynthesized. In Expt. I, six simulated waveforms with pulse shapes differing in the number and location of slope discontinuities were investigated. Listening tests indicated that simulated excitations with pulse shapes with a single slope discontinuity at closure are preferred. In Expt. II, simulated excitations with 16 combinations of opening and closing times of a preferred pulse shape were investigated. Listening tests indicated that very small opening or closing times, or opening times approximately equal to or less than closing times, are not preferred. In general, it was demonstrated that good‐quality synthetic speech can be generated by using simple excitation waveforms specified uniformly over an utterance. The use of tournament testing strategies for perceptual evaluation of speech samples is also described.

Behavioral studies on sailor's choice (bony shallow‐water fish) determined that, at 200 Hz, sonic particle velocity noise received by the lateral line did not mask a sonic pressure signal received by the ear; but sonic pressure noise received by the ear can mask the sonic particle velocity signal received by the lateral line. At 50 Hz, the fish failed to respond to the pressure signal, but pressure noise was still coupled into the velocity‐sensitive lateral‐line system.

Field recordings of underwater sounds of the toothed whaleMonodon monocerosexhibit consistent characteristics not noted in other odontocetes. The sounds were mostly narrow‐band regularly spaced, and often high‐frequency (to 24 kHz). The fundamentals of individual sound pulses ranged from 1.5 to 24 kHz. Both clicks (short pulses produced at repetition rates up to 300/sec) and tones (to 0.1‐sec duration) were noted.

Both ears of 100 young healthy men with no previous military noise exposure, aged 17–23 yr and normal by otoscopy but otherwise unselected, were given Békésy‐type audiometry through 18 kHz with the Rudmose high‐frequency ear‐canal insertion transducer. Minimum audible pressures (MAP) were obtained in approximate agreement with published studies on children and on adolescent males. There is also correspondence with the British 1954 Standard MAP up to 15 kHz. It is suggested that the time is approaching for standardizing audiometry in the octave 10–20 kHz by using all available data.

Some contralateral remote masking results are quoted, which were obtained using a continuously variable delay time between the masking and masked pulses. The agreement between these results and those of Gjaeveneset al.[J. Acoust. Soc. Amer.46, 918–923 (1969)] is outlined. Finally, some of their conclusions are examined in the light of the available evidence.

摘要:
A new method for transducing movements of the mandible is described. The equipment employed includes a three‐coil magnetometer system that enables real‐time recording of jaw movements without encumbrance to natural articulation. Theoretical principles underlying the method are discussed, as are procedures for using and calibrating the equipment. Examples of one‐ and two‐dimensional measurements are presented, the latter being related to displacement pathways followed during nonspeech gestures of the mandible. Beyond the specific method described, it is concluded that magnetometers have attractive potential as a research tool in speech physiology.

The problem of speaker normalization is investigated for classifying the Russian vowels. The known methods of normalization of formantsF1andF2which make their normalized valuesF1NandF2Ninvariant to compression or expansion and to parallel shift are mentioned. A new statistical method of normalization is then suggested. All of these methods are compared using an index of normalization quality (η). The result of the comparison shows that the normalization suggested in this letter has the largest index, not only on the average but also for each individual vowel pair. The procedure of classification of the Russian vowels using a self‐normalized formant plot is shown at the end of the letter.

The ability of subjects to “shadow” speech switched between the ears periodically was compared to that for speech switched in syllable and phoneme units. Shadowing performance, expressed in terms of incorrectly articulated words, was not significantly different for the two conditions under test.

An examination was made of the magnitude of air consumed for plosive‐vowel syllables in oral and whispered speech. The results from 10 adult females revealed consistently greater consumptions for the whispered syllables, generally greater consumptions for the whispered voiceless plosive‐vowel syllables as compared with the whispered voiced plosive‐vowel syllables, and no consumption differences for place of articulation.
