摘要:
Previous studies with synthetic speech have shown that second‐formant transitions are cues for the perception of the stop and nasal consonants. The results of those experiments can be simplified if it is assumed that each consonant has a characteristic and fixed frequency position, or locus, for the second formant, corresponding to the relatively fixed place of production of the consonant. On that basis, the transitions may be regarded as “movements” from the locus to the steady state of the vowel. The experiments reported in this paper provide additional evidence concerning the existence and positions of these second‐formant loci for the voiced stops,b, d, andg. There appears to be a locus fordat 1800 cps and forbat 720 cps. A locus forgcan be demonstrated only when the adjoining vowel has its second formant above about 1200 cps; below that level noglocus was found. The results of these experiments indicate that, for the voiced stops, the transition cannot begin at the locus and go from there to the steady‐state level of the vowel. Rather, if we are to hear the appropriate consonant, the first part of the transition must be silent. The voiced stops are best synthesized by making the duration of the silent interval equal to the duration of the transition itself. An experiment on the first formant revealed that its locus is the same forb, d, andg.

摘要:
This paper presents a comparison of the physical and acoustic measurements in several music rooms at The University of Texas with the subjective reactions of the musicians working in these spaces. Emphasis is placed on the musicians' viewpoint in regard to desirable room characteristics.

摘要:
A device for coupling generators to sound systems in electric musical instruments is described, particularly in connection with its use in a touch‐sensitive keyboard. The construction of such a keyboard is shown to be quite straightforward. Many well‐known types of generators and any timbre control system may be used. The musical value of a touch‐sensitive action is difficult to assess, but the writer is impressed favorably.

摘要:
Two rooms of about the same dimensions, one a rectangular parallelopiped, and one having polycylindrical walls and ceiling, were measured for reverberation times and for speech articulation. No significant differences were found in either characteristic. Since one of the rooms should provide a more diffuse sound field than the other, it can be tentatively concluded that diffusion may have little influence on speech intelligibility. Both rooms exhibited rather poor articulation scores as might have been predicted from their reverberation times.

摘要:
Experimental data on the amplitude of transverse particle velocity associated with the (1,0) mode of rectangular tube for frequencies in the region of cutoff are presented. The distance decay from the source is exponential for frequencies investigated in the rangef/fc⩽0.998 wherefis the frequency of excitation andfcis the mode cutoff frequency. At cutoff, the amplitude drops to the fraction 1/eof its value at the source over a distance interval equal to about 8 times the tube width. For frequencies abovef/fc= 1.01 the progressive wave pattern appears fully developed. Comparison data between theoretical and measured values of attenuation for frequencies below cutoff are also presented.

摘要:
An approximate solution is presented for the fundamental frequency of flexural vibration of a uniform elastic square plate that is point supported at the midpoints of the sides; otherwise, the boundaries of the plate are free. The solutions are valid for plates which have a value of Poisson's ratio of 0.3.
