Six monkeys, conditioned with positive reinforcement techniques on a successive auditory discrimination, required about 1100 trials for acquisition (range; 950–1200 trials). The discriminative stimuli were a tone and a noise of equal intensity and duration. Retention was measured after a 30‐day layoff. The procedure described in this letter is unique in auditory conditioning methodology in that an “OBSERVING” response is required of the animal in order for him to gain access to the stimuli.

A new measure for difference limen (DL) using only the communication properties of the auditory system is proposed. By using this measure, one can also take into account thea prioriprobability distribution of acoustical signals. For the uniforma prioriprobability distribution of acoustical stimuli and in the case of Gaussian linkage between the points of signal and sensory space, this measure passes over to the usual measure for DL known in psychophysics.

A new rationale concerning the subject's attitude toward a tone during exposure was tested in an attempt to find evidence for a central factor in auditory fatigue. The subjects were instructed, in one instance, to attend to the intensity of a 40‐dB SL, 4.0‐kHz tone. The amount of auditory fatigue that resulted was insignificantly different from conditions in which the subjects had been engaged in metal arithmetic or reverie during similar exposures.

Transmission of sound in a duct with a nonlinear acoustic wall impedance is discussed. As a quantitative example, the pressure distribution along a duct in the low frequency approximation is calculated for a particular type of duct lining with known nonlinear characteristics.

In an earlier study. the whispered syllable was found to be of significantly greater duration than the oral. The present study, concerned with the effect of various levels of masking noise upon this performance, finds no effect for noise upon the magnitude of the oral‐whisper difference.

Bubbles can be trapped by a standing sound wave in a liquid. An expression is derived for the force exerted on a spherical bubble by the sound field, and experimental results are presented in support of the theory.

The location of a pulsed ultrasonic scan within the body can be determined using an ultrasonic Doppler shift detector. The technique is also valuable for avoiding gas bubbles in the stomach or intestine, The scattered or reflected beam is detected by the receiving crystal of the Doppler unit. Localization of the pulsed beam is accomplished by searching for a maximum output signal from the Doppler unit.
