摘要:
A theoretical procedure is developed in an effort to solve the acoustic propagation problem in the ocean in the presence of stochastic boundaries. The result for the mean and mean‐squared value of the acoustic field should prove useful in calculating many of the effects of a stochastic surface, without the necessity of treating the surface as a separate problem.

Sound reflection coefficients from cloth covers on glass fiber were measured by the “Interference Pattern Method.” A suitable combination of cloth and glass fiber was found to make the reflection coefficient smaller than that of the case of only glass fiber, at frequencies over 5 kHz.

An explanation is given for the difference between the loudness functions of Richards [(1968). “Monaural Loudness Functions under Masking.” J. Acoust. Soc. Amer.44, 599–605] and the experimental curves previously published by Hellman and Zwilocki [(1963). “Monaural Loudness Function of a 1000‐cps Tone and Interaural Summation,” J. Acoust. Soc. Amer.35, 856–865 (1964). “Loudness Functions of a 1000‐cps Tone in the Presence of a Masking Noise,” J. Acoust. Soc. Amer.36, 1618–1627]. It is shown that most of the difference can be attributed to two factors: a bias introduced by the method of magnitude halving and a misinterpretation of the method of numerical magnitude balance.

The cochlear microphone (CM) has been viewed as stable over long period of time. Recent experiments in which CM was used as an index of hearing loss noted changes occurring as a function of time alone. Experiments were therefore conducted to study these changes. Shifts in CM sensitivity were measured at 13 frequencies in 13 anesthetized cats for periods of up to 300 min. The animals became less sensitive as a more or less linear function or time, the average shifts amounting to about 4 dB. The shifts are regular enough that data can be corrected to allow for them: however, the cause of the shifts their eventual size, and their reversibility all remain to be established.

摘要:
Measurements made on a square flat plastic plate reinforced with a periodic array of six beams were checked with the theoretical input impedances of an infinite plate, an infinite beam, and an infinite orthotropic plate. Comparison shows that the beam‐plate structure reacts like an infinite beam below 500 Hz. But approaches the infinite orthotropic plate prediction at higher frequencies. when excited on a rib. Excellent agreement was found with the theoretical input impedance of an infinite plate when the structure was excited between ribs at its midpoint. Comparison was also made between theoretical and measured impedances after unconstrained viscoelastic damping tile was added to the smooth side of the reinforced plate.

Rewriting the equation of state, with volumetric strain as the variable instead of density strain, brings out clearly the fact that the second‐order source density representing the behavior of finite‐amplitude acoustic waves is determined by a parameter defined as the second‐order compressibility of the medium.
