摘要:
In their letter to the editor, “Speaker identification by speech spectrograms: some further observations,” Boltet al.[J. Acoust. Soc. Am.54, 531–534 (1973)] express an opinion on voice identification as produced in real‐life cases by specially trained professional examiners using a combined aural and visual examination of speaker samples. The opinion of these authors is not based on personal experience or even on a direct observation of these examinations. In addition, they disregard crucial facts that strongly interact with the reliability of those positive decisions produced by professional, full‐time examiners, such as their special training and responsibility, the five possible decisions they are entitled to produce after each examination, the number of samples, and the length of time used to perform each examination. It is our contention that opinions based on feelings other than in actual experience are of little value, irrespective of the scientific authority of those who produce such an opinion.

摘要:
Variations in jaw and tongue‐body position have been studied when the same word is differently stressed but otherwise identically spoken. Differences between the stresses and unstressed cases for the extreme tongue and jaw positions of the vowel sound indicate for the unstressed case a general neutralization, i.e., less extreme articulation relative to some neutral position. In general, our data do not support the existence of physiological limitations that would prevent the articulator from reaching its intended target in the unstressed case. Rather, stress differentiation appears to be preplanned by modifying the vowel target's articulatory representation as well as its temporal features.

摘要:
One of the problems in the design of continuous speech recognition systems is evaluation of the stage which detects occurrences of phonemes in the speech signal. A method of evaluating and optimizing phoneme recognition networks has been developed which uses data obtained by manual “marking” of phoneme locations on a tape recording of speech. With the aid of a digital computer and display, 1090 occurrences of vowels, nasals, and “don't care” conditions were marked in a five‐minute sample of speech. These data, which may be used for measurement of error rates in speech recognition systems, have been included in the IEEE Computer Society repository for data bases.

摘要:
A pulsed, through‐transmission ultrasound system for monitoring displacements of the tongue during speech production is outlined. The technique enables on‐line recording of the position of a discrete element on the dorsal surface of the tongue. A simultaneous cinefluoroscopic ultrasonic study of tongue motions resulted in excellent agreement between ultrasound data obtained with this technique and corresponding data measured from cine films.

摘要:
This work considers free‐flexural vibrations of a free‐elliptical plate by the use of Mathieu functions and modified Mathieu functions which are solutions of the differential equation of motion and by the method leading to the frequency equation by making use of orthogonal property of Mathieu functions. The non‐dimensional frequencies calculated numerically for the first five normal modes of symmetrical vibration about both axes are tabulated for various aspect ratios and are shown in graphs for the eccentricities. The experimental results are obtained and are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results.
