We investigate the scattering of the radiation from an acoustic point source by a solid, elastic prolate spheroid at a variety of transducer–scatterer separations. We find that the most important effect, when contrasted to the plane‐wave limit, is an increase in scattering strength (with decreasing transducer–scatterer separation) associated with the 1/rvariation of the incident field and the finite size of the scatterer. We use the results of this investigation to formulate a rough criterion for establishing the farfield region in scale model scattering experiments in the low‐frequency region.

We emphasize the concept that the radiation force on a target produced by a confined beam of sound is given by that in an open vesselplusan acoustically induced hydrostatic pressure. The possibility of obtaining a continuum of values for the measured radiation force on a perfectly absorbing target is also analyzed.

摘要:
Brief samples of the noise generated by the Bombardier SV‐301‐D tracked vehicle and a Bell 206 helicopter standing on 2‐m‐thick first‐year ice were measured in water, 22 m below the vehicles. Results are presented in the form of third‐octave levels, in the range 250 Hz–40 kHz.

摘要:
A thick‐film polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF2) sample was used to evaluate this material for underwater shock‐sensor applications. The free‐field voltage sensitivity of the sensor showed a flat frequency response with a bandwidth of 2 MHz. The response of the PVF2sample to a 1‐ms pressure pulse was linear to within 0.6 dB at a peak pressure of 69 MPa. The PVF2shock sensor also showed reduced high‐frequency ringing in its response to a shock wave when compared with a similar device using a PZT element.
