The percent correct responses in a two‐interval forced‐choice detection experiment can be calculated from the probability density functions for the excitation on the two intervals. This letter introduces an equation which relates the percent correct responses to the characteristic functions of the probability densities. The equation can result in considerable mathematical simplification in the prediction of detection performance in cases of multiple sources of signal or noise.

Owsley’s and Fay’s analysis of a collinear clustered array of sensors has been extended to the case of an arbitrary number of sensors in each cluster inasmuch as the representation of Gohberg and Semencul (GS) has been employed to provide a convenient and numerically efficient method of computing the minimum variance distortionless look (MVDL) beamformer and array gain for the array. The formalism is also unconstrained by any assumption regarding the strength of turbulent boundary layer (TBL) induced noise relative to the strength of additive uncorrelated sensor noise.

A procedure has been developed that may be used to measure the finestructure of acoustic fields at frequencies up to 10 MHz. It consists basically of locating a microsphere in the pressure field at the point of interest and measuring the amplitude of the scattered waves. Details of the system are discussed, and some examples of experimental data presented.

The different thermoviscous attenuation regions for the principal mode of sound propagation in a gas‐filled tube may be defined in a simple diagram, with boundaries based on discriminants containing dimensionless combinations of radius, wavelength, and mean free path. The additional condition for propagation of higher‐order modes may be placed on the same diagram. The condition is always satisfied in the ’’very wide tube’’ region, which makes experimental investigations of the principal mode more difficult in this region.
