AbstractParticle Measurement, State of the Art, Trends – Needs.An excellent overview of the various goals of particle technology, which have long extended far beyond particle size analysis, is provided by POWTECH. The following examples should serve to illustrate the scope of such measurements and the trends noted in this area: measurements for the monitoring of clean rooms; measurements supporting process engineering developments; and process analysis. There is wide range of instrumentation available for the assessment of dispersed product states. Based on proven principles these instruments are becoming more user friendly and available with improved data evaluation; the methods of evaluation are, unfortunately, still not clear to the user. The current trend is in two directions: (1) simultaneous acquisition of several measurements for more accurate determination of the required quantity or for determination of two different quantities and (2) on‐line or in‐line measurement, which has to be fast, economical, and

AbstractUtilisation of Different Components of Scattered Light for Particle Size Determination in Dispersed Systems. Light scattered by finely and coarsely dispersed particles can be used in variety of ways for characterization of sprays, emulsions, or suspensions. The characteristic of greatest interest is the particle size or the particle size distribution. While homogeneous, coarsely dispersed particles at sufficient dilutions and randomly distributed in a transparent continuous phase are generally amenable to particle size analysis, finely dispersed particles at higher concentrations or coarsely dispersed particles containing finely dispersed components are often difficult to measure. This article discusses ways of overcoming such difficulties on the basis of examples taken mainly from phase Doppler anemometry.

AbstractExtrusion and Formability of Ceramic Pastes. Numerous complicated catalyst geometries are produced by extrusion of plastic ceramic materials. The demands on the precision of the forming process and the formability of the materials are extremely high. At a first glance, plastic ceramic materials seem to be concentrated solid‐liquid suspensions. Rheometric methods, in particular capillary rheometry, are especially suitable for testing of these materials. However, the flow processes occurring during extrusion are very complex, with many special effects such as slip, shear‐thinning, shear hardening, high entrance pressure loss. Viscosity functions are not material functions. However, in spite of these difficulties, capillary rheometry, when critically applied, is a most advantageous tool in the purposeful development of easily extrudable ceramic materials. Correlation of the rheometric test results with the extrusion process during the production of honeycomb geometries is presented using aluminium oxide ceramics as an exam

摘要:
AbstractUse of Surfactants for Mechanical Liquid Separation. Mechanical dewatering of finegrained solid materials can be improved by the addition of surfactants. As interface‐active substances surfactants reduce surface tension and consequently the capillary forces within the bed of solid particles. A hydrophobization of the solid surface due to the adsorption of surfactants may contribute to further reduction of moisture as well. The development of non‐foaming surfactants enables the use without distrubing other ongoing processes by the formation of foam. Investigations on the interaction between the adsorption behaviour, type of material surface, and contact time during dewatering processes support the optimization of dewatering agents.
