AbstractEducation of chemical engineers and comparison of qualifications within the European Community.The present survey compares and contrasts the various structures of engineering education, and especially of chemical engineering education, in the member countries of the European Community (EC). Each of the different education systems within the EC has its advantages and disadvantages and none of the systems is definitely superior to others. Each system is largely the product of national pecularities and should be seen in the light of the specific cultural background. This often impedes a complete transfer of single elements from one system to another. Proven principles of other education system should, however, serve much more than has been the case in past as a guideline for reforms in our country. Possible steps in this direction are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractMeasuring techniques for gas/solid fluidized bed reactors.Significant progress has been made in the field of fluidization in recent years due to its application to the combustion of coal as well as sewage sludges and other residues. The new applications have also created a demand for new measuring techniques. In the present paper the available measuring techniques for fluid mechanical properties are reviewed, ranging from simple measurements for the determination of bed expansion to more sophisticated techniques for the determination of local solids concentrations, velocities, and mass flows. Furthermore, the problem of gas sampling from fluidized bed reactors is discussed. Among others, a measuring technique based on mass spectrometry is presented for local and instantaneous measurements of gas concentrations.

AbstractAtomization as a unit process.Liquid atomization can be classified by three successive steps: disintegration; multiphase flow in the spray; and impact of droplets on the substrate. The most important process parameter is the size distribution of the droplets. By means of this parameter the liquid disintegration process can be related to the different transport phenomena in the spray or to the impacting process. The size distribution of the droplets is not a static parameter but an evolving result of local changes depending on sifting effects, on strand formation, on coalescence, on evaporation, on drying or chemical reaction processes. It is thus essential, for further analysis, to start from local instead of integral size distributions. This will be possible because of the efficiency of new particle sizing instruments with high spatial or temporal resolution. This opens the possibility for differential instead of integral balance. From this one can derive, for the future, higher precision of apparatus design and improved optimization procedures for process design. Finally, appropriate measuring techniques are discussed with regard to their special applicability to liquid atomization analysis.

摘要:
AbstractMethodology and applications of statistical process and quality control in chemical plant.Statistical process and quality control, known respectively as SPC and SQC, presently command considerably attention. Originating with buyers of chemical products, the vocabulary and methodology of this area of expertise are increasingly entering the chemical plant. Appropriate use of these techniques is considered in the present article. A brief presentation of the philosophy of quality assurance in production using the methods of SPC and SQC is followed by a terse explanation of the goals and techniques of SPC/SQC. The applicability of the methods to process engineering is a special problem. Questions of the necessary adaptation and introduction into the conventional procedures of process control are discussed. Instrumentalization of plant with digital process controllers provides a framework for implementation of integrated solutions of such quality assurance systems in production. This is explained with the aid of examples.
