摘要:
AbstractRational utilization and supply of thermal energy in the chemical industry. The development of energy consumption since 1960 is considered, paying special attention to the consumption trends in industry and the position and consumption structure of the chemical industry. The need for maximum exergonic utilization in steam supply is clearly seen. The various possibilities of energetic utilization are then illustrated for an example of steam supply. Utilization of steam from process waste heat is considered as an illustration, and some comments on the pertinent engineering are made. The possibilities and dangers of condensate recovery from process heat exchangers are mentioned in conclusion.

摘要:
AbstractHeat radiation in packed solids. The term packed solids embraces fixed beds and all other, sometimes less rigidly fixed, arrangements of solids particles of any shape in a gaseous environment. Cell and quasihomogeneous models have been developed for determining heat radiation in such systems and their predictions compared with one another and especially with available experimental data. Since fixed beds of spherical particles have been considered most frequently so far, they receive the greatest attention in this article. Topics such as radiation components in insulation systems, in chemical fixed bed reactors, in porous particles, and the effect of radiation on the wall heat transfer coefficient are mentioned only briefly.

AbstractDesign approaches for the scaling‐up of multiphase flow apparatus. The scaling‐up of apparatus from the laboratory‐to the industrial‐scale is illustrated with aid of two examples. Phase partition during the flow of liquids and gases through packing layers is dealt with. It requires particular attention if the volumes of flow are different and if the efficiency of material exchange on an industrial scale referred to volume is to be the same as on a laboratory scale. A design approach for the uniform distribution of a small volume of gas in uniflow with a large volume of liquid is described. For counter‐current flow of large volumes of gas and small volumes of liquid an arrangement of packing with least possible drop in pressure is required. AbstractTurbulent flow and combustion. Flame‐generated turbulence was long a topic of lively discussion. Since the hot gases arising on combustion are much more viscous than, e.g. cold air and cold natural gas, the Reynolds number of a flow system is more likely to fall. Indeed, combustion is observed to promote laminar flow at low Reynolds numbers. The concept of “flame‐generated” turbulence was imprecisely defined; a predominant thought was concerned with the turbulence‐reinforcing effect of combustion in an existing field of turbulent flow. AbstractApplications of jet pumps. Nowadays jet pumps are economically used in many branches of industry. The versatility of these simply constructed devices is demonstrated for the various kinds of jet pumps. The construction and mode of operation of the pumps is briefly explained, and those advantages which have ensured a wide acceptance of these pumps are presented. Moreover, reference is made to fundamental publications concerned with the design and computation of jet pumps.
