AbstractSelective drying of mixture‐containing products. Properties and quality of products containing solvent mixtures can be influenced considerably by the drying process. This concerns, e. g. the aroma content of fruit concentrates, the tear resistance of paper, the intensity of the colour of pigments, the ductility of cable insulation, toxic residues in tablets, residual monomers in polymers, etc. Both, the amount of residual moisture and its composition are of decisive importance. Predictions are possible given a knowledge of both the course of the drying curve and the course of the composition curve. The latter results from five basic physical processes, viz. vapour‐liquid‐solid phase equilibria, diffusion in the gas phase, diffusion in the liquid phase, capillary flow, and heat transfer. This combined action can be described both theoretically and experimentally for simple but indicative cases. AbstractSimulation of industrial combustion systems. This contribution surveys the state of the art of mathematical modelling of industrial flames and combustion chambers with the aid of examples. No claim is made to completeness. It should be noted that the complexity of the mathematical model is limited by available computer power, even though this power is increasing, and one is thus compelled to concentrate on essential aspects in calculating combustion chambers. Nevertheless, valuable results are obtainable here, which often cannot be gained in a real system because the geometric dimensions are too large, or specific quantities cannot be measured, or a firing plant cannot be disturbed in operation. In the area of pollutant production, mathematical models help to provide an understanding of the operating mechanisms and possible means of influencing them. However, the greatest advantage over series of measurements lies in the possibility of performing parametric studies under otherwise identical conditions, which proves very difficult or impossible in practice.

AbstractThermal integration and process optimization. The Pinch method for optimization of thermal integration of chemical plant has been widely accepted in recent years. Serving initially only as an aid in the design of energetically optimized heat exchanger networks, the method was developed in the course of time with regard to the following questions: optimization of heating and cooling systems; simultaneous optimization of energy and investment costs; operability, start‐up and shut‐down behaviour; inclusion of heat engines; optimization of old plant; and process optimization. The fundamentals of the Pinch method are summarized and further developments concerning development of the method for simultaneous optimization of energy and capital costs are presented.
