A simple method for screening populations for the apolipoprotein E polymorphism which involves isoelectric focusing of delipidated samples on polyacrylamide gels of pH 4.5–5.8 followed by immunoblotting using a double-antibody technique is presented. The method is a synthesis of two previously published procedures and works well on samples that have been stored for as long as 15 year

Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for the anonymous DNA probe OS-2 were studied in a Caucasian population. In a sample of 15 two- and three-generation families and 31 unrelated individuals, the restriction endonuclease TaqI revealed an RFLP not seen in a Japanese sample. A similar situation has been observed for this probe with the restriction endonuclease HindIII

摘要:
Previous investigations have shown that trivalent arsenic is inducing chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs). In a search for the genotoxic mechanism we have studied the effects of the oxygen-radical-scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) on arsenic-induced SCEs in cultured human lymphocytes. The results indicate that SOD and possibly also CAT have a protective effect against arsenic-induced DNA damage. Arsenic, which is emitted in environmental pollutions e.g. from smelters and coal-fired power plants, appears to be underestimated as environmental mutagen and potential synergist to ionizing radiation.

The polymorphism of the α2HS-glycoprotein (A2HS) was analysed in Rarotonga and Mangaia, the Cook Islands. The A2HS*2 frequency was found to be the highest value among all populations studied up to now. There was a significant difference in A2HS*2 gene frequencies between the two populations, Rarotonga (0.62) and Mangaia (0.76)
