AbstractThe formation of CO2and H2O in the oxidation of coal was studied at different temperatures. Coals, representing typical stadia of a coalification series were investigated.The distinguishing feature of the experiments was the fact that the temperature throughout the reacting mass of coal was completely constant, this being the case in the experiments carried out below, as well as in those carried out above the ignition temperature.The data obtained were analysed by the Kreulen‐ter Horst method.From this it appeared that the formation of CO2and H2O in the oxidation of coal is a reaction which takes place completely independently of the formation of humic acids.The results, published previously by Parr and Miller, and also those of Francis and Morris, are discussed and explained as they are partially contradictor

AbstractFrom cracked distillates of Californian petroleum we isolated a mixture of basic nitrogen compounds distilling up to 125° at 1.5 mm. The part of this mixture of bases, which boiled up to 172.5° at 760 mm was examined very systematically, this mixture consists of homologues of pyridine. Next portion of boiling range 172.5‐215° at 760 mm also consists of homologues of pyridine; in this boiling range only three fractions were systematically examined.The portion of boiling range 215° at 760 mm to 147.5° at 30 mm was again examined systematically. Besides pyridine homologues these fractions contain quinoline, isoquinoline and homologues of these compounds. The fractions boiling above 147.5° at 30 mm have not been examined; it is probable that these fractions contain numerous homologues of quinoline and isoquinoline.We isolated in all 31 basic nitrogen compounds in the form of the picrates and (or) picrolonates. All these bases, except one, belong to the pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline type. The following compounds were identified: all possible isomers of the monomethyl pyridines and of the dimethylpyridines; 2.3.6 and 2.4.6 trimethylpyridine; 4‐ethylpyridine and three isomeric methyl‐ethyl pyridines in which the methylgroup occurs in the 2‐position (namely: 2,4‐ 2,5‐ and 2,6‐); 2‐ethyl‐4‐methylpyridine; quinoline, five isomeric methylquinolines (namely 2‐, 3‐, 4‐, 7‐, 8‐) and 2,8‐dimethylquinoline; isoquinoline; 1‐methyl‐ and 3‐methyl‐isoquinoline.Besides these compounds of which the structure could be identified, five bases of yet unknown structure were isolated. The base C7H9N (b.pt. about 147°) and the two isomeric bases C8H11N (b.pt. 157.6 resp. 167.5) and the base C10H15N (b.pt. 188°) are probably pyridine homologues.The base C11H15N isolated from the fraction boiling at 142.5‐145° at 30 mm is perhaps a trimethylpyrindane.Details are given about the hydrogenation of the

AbstractWith the help of the Sharples Super‐centrifuge the casein was centrifuged out of skimmed milk, and the quite transparant gel, the whey belonging to it and the original milk were analyzed for dry weight, casein content, albumin, Ca, PO4citric acid, Mg, K, Na, Cl and lactose.From the results of the analysis for lactose and chlorine the bound water can be calculated: 0.55 gram per gram of casein was found.Of the remaining constituents only Ca and PO4are bound to any extent to the casein. If one subtracts from the PO4that part which is bound as an ester in the casein and an equimolecular amount of Ca, the molecular ratio of Ca : PO4becomes as 3 : 2, thus the same as in Ca3(PO4)2. AbstractDurch trockene Destillation eines Gemisches von Schleimsäure und einem Halogenanilin wurden die folgenden Pyrrole bereitet: 1‐(4‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol, 1‐(3‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol, 1‐(2‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol und l‐(3‐Bromphenyl)‐pyrrol.Bei der thermischen Umsetzung des 1‐(4‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrols bei 700° wurde ein einheitliches C‐(4‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol erhalten; diese Verbindung war mit dem 2‐(4‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol identisch, das aus 4‐Chlorbenzoylessigester, α,β‐Dichloräther und Ammoniak synthetisiert worden war.Die thermische Umlagerung des 1‐(3‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrols liefert ebenfalls ein einheitliches C‐(3‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrol; auch bei der Umlagerung des 1‐(2‐Chlorphenyl)‐pyrrols und des 1‐(3‐Bromphenyl)‐pyrrols werden wahrscheinlich einheitliche C‐(Halogenphenyl)‐pyrrole gebildet.
