Abstract4‐Methoxy‐6‐methylhemimellitic acid and its isomers, 3‐methoxy‐5‐methyltrimellitic and 5‐methoxy‐3‐methyltrimellitic acid have been synthesized. 4‐Methoxy‐6‐methylhemimellitic acid is identical with a degradation product of mollisin methyl ether. Evidence is presented from which it must be concluded that cochenillic acid ‐ a degradation product of the well‐known insect pigments carminic and kermesic acids ‐ considered since 1897 to be 4‐hydroxy‐6‐methylhemimellitic acid is in fact 5‐hydroxy‐3‐methyltrimellitic acid. AbstractAddition of an organic isocyanate to hydroxy‐esters or amino‐esters results in attachment of the active H of the OH or NH2group to the N atom of the isocyanate, the rest of the adding molecule being linked to the C atom of the N = C bond. Though stable in themselves, the resulting products undergo cyclisation in inert media under the catalytic influence of sodium, or in some cases, by simply heating without any medium. The final ring compounds obtained in this way are oxazolidinediones, hydantoins, oxazines, uracils and quinazolidinediones starting with α‐hydroxy‐esters, α‐amino‐esters,ortho‐hydroxybenzoates, β‐amino‐esters, andortho‐aminobenzoates, respectively, as the original addition partners. β‐Hydroxy‐esters with a free H in the α‐position give unsaturated ami
