AbstractWhen tetraglycine methyl ester is heated at 100° C a decrease in methoxyl content is observed, mainly after an induction period of about 200 hours. The reaction is virtually finished after 600 hours. Previous powdering of the ester crystals slightly reduces the induction period. AbstractThe infrared absorption curves of 18 acetals and ketals have been measured in the region 1070–1190 cm−1.The C—O—C band at 1130 cm−1(ethers) is split in the case of acetals and ketals (C‐O‐C‐O‐C) into three branches: at 1158—1190 cm−1at 1124—1143 cm−1and at 1063—1098 cm−1.The molecular extinction coefficient of the last band is 2—5.104. A fourth band appears in the region 1038—1056 cm−1.A tentative explanation of the observed effects is given.Another characteristic band, at 1110 cm−1appears only in the spectra of acetals, not in those of ketals, and may be related to a C—H deformatio

Abstract(1)The condensation of a number of carbonyl compounds with ethanolamine and with amino‐alcohols having a tertiary hydroxy‐ and a primary amino‐group, has been studied. The molecular refraction and the infrared spectrum have been used to distinguish between the oxazolidine and Schiff's base structures which are both possible for the condensation products.(2)Aromatic and α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl compounds, on the whole, tend to form Schiff's bases, saturated carbonyl compounds oxazolidines, with ethanolamine. Introduction of C‐alkyl groups into the ethanolamine system favours the formation of oxazolidines even with aromatic aldehydes and ketones.(3)In the infrared spectrum of simple CN‐compounds in alcoholic solution, a solvation effect has been observed. Also, the tautomerisability of substances containing the system CH−1—CN, to HC C—NH has been demonstrated.(4)The (non‐conjugated) CN double bond absorbs in the infrared at about 1670 cm−21whilst the oxazolidine system is characterised by three bands (1149—1185; 1116—1139; 1086—1118 cm−1)in the 1100—1200 cm−1region.(5)The similarity of the infrared spectra of all heterocycli

AbstractFor a number of products of the condensation between ethanolamine or 2‐amino‐3‐methyl‐butanol‐3 and aromatic aldehydes and ketones. the ultraviolet spectrum has been measured. Abstract(1)Eight ketones and p‐chlorobenzaldehyde have been condensed with ethylenediamine. Only cyclohexanone and its methyl‐derivatives give imidazolidines; in all other cases, double Schiff's bases are formed.
