AbstractThe speed of decomposition of solutions of chromic acid in strong (e.g. 100%) sulphuric acid is reduced by the product of the reaction, a nearly colourless substance which precipitates when its solution is heated.The formation of this precipitate and the reduction of the speed of reaction may be observed also when a slight amount of water is present, both effects increasing with increasing sulphuric acid content.A positive autocatalytic effect in more diluted sulphuric acid is already knownH. Rec. trav. chim. 55, 874 (1936)..In combination with the hypothesis which was developed for the explanation of the variations of the speed of decomposition, which result from a change in the composition of the solventH. Snethlage, Rec. trav. chim. 55, 712 (1936)..), these two catalytic effects allow the understanding of the behaviour of decomposing solutions of chromic acid at any composition of the solvent (at least above 60% acid) and at any stage of the decomposition.

AbstractThe investigation of this essential oil showed that it contains 2‐decene‐1‐alI published a preliminarycommunication on 2‐decene‐1‐a1 in Proc. Royal Netherlands Acad. Amsterdam 32 (1929)..) as its principal constituent. Further 2‐octene‐1‐al was encountered in the lower boiling fractions, as well as a small amount of a laevorotatory terpene boiling at 165° and finally some acids, probably already partially produced by the oxidation of the aldehydes in air in the steam distillation and further on storage in incompletely filled or incompletely closed bottles. 2‐dodecene‐1‐al was detected in the

AbstractHexadecene‐9‐oic acid, observed many years ago in seal, cod, and other oils of marine animals, and later recognised as a prominent constituent of nearly all marine animal fats, has more recently been found to be present in reserve fats throughout both animal and vegetable kingdoms.
