The supernatant toxin of Clostridium botulinum type E, at a concentration of 2x104mouse units (MU/ml), was exposed to ozone at a flow rate of 110 ml/minute (8.5 ppm dissolved residual), and was inactivated after twelve minutes. A tenfold lower concentration was completely inactivated in less than one minute with an ozone concentration of 0.01 ppm.

Inactivation kinetics with continuously applied ozone were approximately exponential with respect to time and concentration. The most resistant of the tested viruses was human rotavirus and the most sensitive f2 coliphage. The disinfectant was most reactive at low pH and viral sensitivity was increased ten-fold in the presence of 0.5M sodium bicarbonate. Temperature, the presence of added peptone nor suspended solids greatly influenced inactivation, but ultrasonic treatment did, whether applied before or during ozonation. The chemistry of ozone and its mechanism of action is discussed.

In order to determine effective processes for purifying polluted source waters 1n Harbin City, various processes consisting of ozonation, sand filtration, and/or GAC filtration and adsorption, i.e., ozonation ( “O3” Process), ozonatlon/sand filtration ( “O3+ SF” Process), ozonation/biological activated carbon ( “O3+ BAC” Process), ozonation/sand filtration/biological activated carbon ( “O3+ SF + BAC” Process), and granular activated carbon (“GAC” Process) were tested In an 8 m3/d capacity pilot plant. In addition, a small plant of 500 L/d capacity was used to conduct comparative studies between the two processes “GAC” and “O3+ BAC”, as well as two types of carbon.

A preliminary study on removing THMs from chlorinated water by ozonation ( “O3” process) and granular activated carbon bed filtration and adsorption (AC process) was carried out. It was found that the chloroform content in chlorinated water was reduced to some extent by ozonation at low dosages, but then it increased steeply with time, and finally reached much higher than the original values.

This paper summarizes the results of research on the treatment of synthetically prepared aqueous solutions of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and cyclotrimethylene–trinitramine (RDX) in the weight ratio 70%/30% representing a typical munitions wastewater, by a combination of ozone and ultrasound. A parametric study investigated the relationship among the variables: (1) initial solution pH (5.84 → 10.0); (2) ultrasound power level (5 → 50 watts at 852.0 to 863.0 kHz);(3) ultrasound frequency level (60.6 → 1,007.0 kHz); (4) solution concentration (70/30 mg/l TNT/RDX solutions volumetrically diluted with distilled water in the ratios 1/0, 1/1, 1/3); (5) reaction temperature (25 → 59°C). Removal rates of both TNT and TOC increased directly with increases in reaction temperature and initial solution pH. Likewise, increased sound power level produced enhanced system kinetic responses; however, these were attributed to reaction mass temperature increases. Ultrasound was found to inhibit reaction kinetics at high temperatures and pH because it promoted radical–radical extinguishment reaction.
