摘要:
A great number of studies have been performed dealing with the use of ozone in the tertiary treatment of wastewaters in both laboratory and pilot plant scales. As each study had its own particular experimental conditions, the use of ozone is one of the only common parts of these studies. Some of the different results obtained may be explained upon examination of the phenomena. A standard pilot plant adapted to ozonation purposes is described so that the study of parameters for guide–lines for process automatization becomes easier. Generally, the choice of feed gas for the ozone generators has been determined on the basis of economics. However, it is interesting to note the influence of such gas not only on the ozone concentration but also on the classical wastewater parameters. Since comparisons are possible, a better understanding of the reactions and a better economical point of view are obtained in the treatment of wastewaters with ozone.

摘要:
For potable water treatment, the intent of disinfection is to provide absolute safety in terms of pathogenic microorganisms or viruses. In the case of waste water treatment, the main goal of disinfection is to reduce the concentration of germs. The pratical conditions of ozone application can be changed, so that the necessary applied ozone dose is reduced. Certain polyelectrolytes have an effect on the mass transfer of ozone. That effect seems to be present both on bubble–water mass transfer and on disinfection. So the addition of polyelectrolyte before ozonation is able to reduce the applied ozone dose required ; that is to increase the efficiency of disinfection by ozone.

Successful wastewater disinfection was achieved under stringent bacteriological standards with a 480 g/hr generator pilot facility. Optimization of the facility required an applied dose of 30 mg/1 (13 to 19 W–hr/g ozone produced) to obtain a 2.2 total coliform per 100 ml disinfection level of nitrified effluent. An applied dose of 20 mg/1 (18 W–hr/g) is optimal for a 70 total coliform per 100 ml disinfection level of secondary effluent. The approach to ozonation system optimization, including generator mapping and contactor evaluation, is presented.

To prevent encroachment of undesirable fish species entrained in Connecticut River water diverted to the Quabbin Reservoir, the investigators determined levels of ozone and chlorine required to destroy all larvae and eggs of selected test organisms within 48 hours. The oxidant exposure duration of three hours was chosen to reflect the transit time of the diverted water from the Northfield impoundment to Quabbin. The experimental design reflected both in-line and contact chamber modes of oxidant administration.

摘要:
A modified iodometric procedure using an absorbing solution of 2% NBKI with a known amount of As(III) is described for 10 ml aqueous samples. Ozone contents from 0.5 to 65 mg O3/I were determined. High ozone concentrations can also be measured for generator calibration. This method gives results which are not significantly different than a boric acid method but are for a modified standard methods procedure. Volatility of iodine has been completely eliminated. Stabilized samples do not make the time between sampling and final titration critical.

Indent approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) from both left and right margins for typing the abstract. The abstract should be approximately 50 to 70 words in length.
