摘要:
Activated hydrogen peroxide produces very reactive OH-radicals which destroy hazardous contaminants in water. The principles and different methods of activation are described. Results from laboratory studies show the numerous applications of this new technology. A successful scaleup of laboratory tests to an industrial level is discussed. Finally, a cost estimate for treating different types of water with hydrogen peroxide is presented.

摘要:
Ozone used in preoxidation for water treatment processes allows the removal of inorganic compounds such as iron and manganese. The reactivity of ozone and manganese has been studied in a wide pH range. However, some difficulties appeared in the determination of the different species because of secondary reactions, the main difficulty being the interaction between indigo (used to determine ozone concentration) and manganese dioxide formed during ozonation.

Metal-complex azo dyes constitute a significant fraction of the dyes used in the textile industry and exhibit properties such as superior light- and wash-fastness. While effluent color is not always regulated, the textile finishing industry often decolorizes wastewater using processes including chemical oxidation. In this study, the use of ozone, hydrogen peroxide/ozone and UV/ozone oxidant systems was examined for treatment of two common metal-complex (premetalized) dyes, Acid Black 52 (chromium) and Direct Blue 80 (copper). Oxidant dosages required for decolorization of these dyes were determined. The effect of bicarbonate alkalinity on the ozonation and the hydrogen peroxide/ozone processes also was examined.

摘要:
Competition of direct and decomposition reactions that ozone can undergo in water when a given compound is present is studied according to concepts of absorption theories. The importance of different parameters, such as pH, rate constants, mass transfer coefficients and concentration of reactants, is considered to clarify which reaction prevails. Parameters like Hatta numbers (film theory) or diffusion and reaction times (surface renewal theories) are key factors to check the competition of these reactions.

摘要:
Bacterial assay which can detect the genotoxicity, induction of error-prone repair genes on DNA was applied to samples which were collected at a night soil treatment plant. The genotoxicity of each sample was measured by using this bacterial assay, called the umu test. Strong genotoxic potency was found in the sediments of raw night soil, that is, human feces. There are some substances which show toxicity to the DNA and are attributable to the baked foods or metabolites in human digestive organs. These potencies could not be removed easily in the biological decomposition process through survey of the treatment plant. It was quite clear that more effective reduction could be achieved by ozonation at the treatment condition of about 1 mg O3/mg C.
