Cyclodecane and cyclohexane were converted to the corresponding cycloalkanones and cycloalkanols upon ozonation at acidic pH. Also some ring cleavage to dicarboxylic acids or aldehydoacids was observed.

摘要:
Ozonation of the complexing agent ethylenediaminetetra(methylenephosphonic acid) (EDTMP) was studied with bench-scale experiments. As it turned out that EDTMP is totally oxidized within a few seconds, a mechanism for the reaction of EDTMP with ozone is presented which predicts the formation of the herbicide N-phosphonomethylglycine (glyphosate) and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). The experimental results confirm the predicted mechanism as well as the formation of glyphosate and AMPA during ozonation of waters containing EDTMP.

摘要:
The problems caused by discharges of colored dye waste into the sewer are described. Coloration of the River Churnet by the Leek Sewage Treatment Works (STW) effluent necessitated the setting of color discharge consent conditions by the National Rivers Authority (now the Environment Agency). These and other tightened consent conditions led to the planning of a major works extension to give an extensive flow sheet unique to the UK. The conceptual design is described, together with four years operating data. The extended plant has performed extremely well since October 1992, and in particular the ozonation process has given excellent color removal. Resulting improvements in the downstream water quality of the River Churnet have been demonstrated by the lack of public complaint and by the return of trout and chub.

This paper describes a long term experiment undertaken with six benchscale landfill lysimeters to investigate whether ozone treatment can increase the biodegradability of the leachates arising from the lysimeters, and reduce the gradual build-up of difficult-to-treat ‘hard’ COD, typical of leachates of older landfills. Leachate from all six lysimeters was recirculated through pulverized domestic waste every two weeks. Leachate from four of the lysimeters was ozonated at different doses before recirculation; two lysimeters from the onset of the experiment; and two after a stable methanogenic phase was established. The recirculation of ozonated leachates did not prevent a fully developed methanogenic phase from being established within the lysimeters. Ozone doses of at least 0.06 mg O3per mg COD were found to increase the BOD5/COD ratio, when applied to leachates from lysimeters in a post-methanogenic phase.

摘要:
With the adoption of European Community Directives regarding bathing water quality and the potential extension of bathing waters standards to all recreational waters, the disinfection of wastewater effluents has become an option of increasing interest. Ozone is a very powerful oxidant, capable of fast and effective disinfection. Due to its oxidizing potential, its application to final municipal effluents could have a beneficial effect on the effluent quality, although some concerns exist over the formation of potentially harmful by-products such as organic halides.

A study to evaluate the effect of ozone on solids removal during the coagulation-flocculation of wastewater from Mexico City drainage (including domestic and industrial) was conducted. Results of this study show significant improvements in the effluent quality with small ozone doses. The optimum ozone dosage was found to be 3.32 mg L−1± 0.20. With this dosage it is possible to reduce the coagulant concentration from 50 mg L−1to 40 mg L−1without affecting the effluent quality. When coagulant dose is not reduced, an increase in the flocs' settling velocity due to a larger average size (with a decrease in TSS) is observed before and after filtration. In all cases, reductions in turbidity and color levels are seen when polyelectrolytes are used. The best results are achieved using a relation of ≈ 0.02 g O3/g TOC.

This research investigates the kinetics of the reaction between dissolved ozone and pentachlorophenol in acidic and neutral buffer solutions over the temperature range of 10° to 40°C. The reaction is very fast and five to six moles of ozone are required for conversion of each mole of pentachlorophenol. The overall kinetics are second order, with first order each in the concentrations of ozone and pentachlorophenol. At 25°C, the overall rate constant ranges from 7.55 x 104to 2.49 x 107L/Ms as the solution pH changes from 2 to 7. The ozonation rate increases as the fraction of pentachlorophenate in the solution increases, and the rate constant varies in proportion to [HO−]0.75in the pH range of about 2 to 5. The reaction is enhanced by temperature, and correlations by the Arrhenius equation yield an average activation energy of 27 kJ/mole.
