Two recirculating marine systems using ozonization were examined. In the first system (2271 liters), ozone, used as an oxidative supplement to biological filtration, maintained filter bed effluent levels of total ammonia, unionized ammonia, and nitrite within acceptable limits while nitrates were elevated. Within 24 hours of the cessation of ozonization these levels reversed. In the second system (75,700 liters), a newly-designed, small, high-output ozone generator was evaluated with results similar to those reported for the first system.

摘要:
The effects of ozone and chlorine, used for antifoulant treatment of cooling waters and disinfection of polluted waters, on the nonvolatile organic constituents in such waters are examined using the complimentary techniques of high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and bioscreening. HPLC is used to separate the nonvolatile organic constituents which are detected by UV absorbance or cerate oxidimetry. The bioscreening method used is a determination of bacterial mutagenic activity. To date, no significant mutagenic activity has been determined for constituents separated from ozonized effluents of waste-water treatment plants.

To examine some effects of ozonizing seawater components, residual oxidant levels were measured amperometrically in buffered solutions (pH 2.8, 7.0, or 10.4) treated with an O2-O3gas stream at room temperature. The results may be interpreted in terms of competition for O3by Br−; (which preserves the measurable oxidizing capacity of the solution through formation of active Br+species) and OH−(which catalytically destroys the measurable oxidizing capacity by formation of analytically inert O2; and H2O2).

To determine the potential biological effects of bromoform release into marine waters, short-term toxicity bioassays and 28-day uptake/28-day depuration studies were conducted withProtothaca staminea, Mercenaria mercenaria, Crassostrea virginica, Penaeus aztecus, andBrevoortia tyrannus. The 96-hr LC50's ranged from approximately 7 ppm (B. tyrannus) to greater than 40 ppm (P. staminea). Shrimp and menhaden behavior was significantly altered by bromoform exposure.

摘要:
An ozone-UV water treatment system was constructed and evaluated for quarantine use. Nonindigenous oyster larvae effluent is ozonized in a 1200 liter holding tank to eliminate all pathogenic bacteria. Effluent is exposed for 80 minutes with an average ozone residual of 1.78 mg/liter, after which it is treated with an ultraviolet sanitizer as an added precaution.

The effect of intermittent versus simultaneous continuous addition of ozone was examined on the removal of humic acid from the water of Lake Constance and the river Ruhr. The intermittent addition was found to be significantly more effective and to produce more polar and small molecule oxidation products with lower trihalomethane formation potential.

The reactions of ozone with dissolved organics in aqueous media are considered in terms of two reaction pathways: direct reactions of ozone and free radical reactions involving a hydroxyl free radical intermediate. The selectivity and reaction rate are correlated with the molecular structure of the organic compound. The effect of free radical quenchers are examined.
