摘要:
In this study, the use of a cocurrent downflow jet pump contactor for possible ozone disinfection was demonstrated. The results showed that this type of reactor has an advantage over conventional contactors such as bubble columns and U-tube columns since it showed a high mass transfer coefficient. Interestingly, the mass transfer coefficient is found to be nearly independent of the gas to liquid volumetric flow ratio (QG/QL). The explanation and the empirical correlation for mass transfer coefficient (kLa) also are described in this paper.

摘要:
The reduction of odor emanating from wasted swine manure is a very challenging environmental engineering problem. In an earlier work (Watkins et al., 1997), we showed the effect of ozone in reducing the odor and concentration of phenolic compounds in swine manure obtained from the pits under the slotted floors where the swine were housed. In this paper, we have expanded significantly upon the work of Watkins et al. by determining the effect of storage on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the swine manure slurry and whether the efficacy of ozonation is dependent upon storage time.

摘要:
The generation of ozone has been investigated through test arrangements which consist of the use of a new type of high-voltage triggered pulser supply connected with a wire/cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge reactor. For this purpose various effects of discharge parameters, like frequency, gas flow and applied voltage, on the ozone efficiency and production rate have been clarified, and in particular the saturation mode has been displayed. The ozone reactor behavior is described by a parametric law deduced from this experimental study.

In an ozone-containing water a suspension of a few milligrams per liter of activated carbon (AQ or carbon black (CB) initiates a radical-type chain reaction that then proceeds in the aqueous phase and accelerates the transformation of O3into secondary radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals (°OH). This results in an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) that is similar to an O3-based AOP involving application of H2O2or UV-irradiation. We have studied these phenomena by observing the effect of suspensions of AC and CB on the rate of transformation of O3in lakewater and in well-characterized solutions. In addition, the stoichiometric yield factor of the AC-catalyzed conversion of O3, into °OH has been shown to be comparable to that which is achieved by a slower process in the absence of AC. This comparison has been based on the measured depletion of an O3-resistant organic °OH probe that was added as a trace reference compound and that competed with a kinetic excess of solutes that controlled the lifetime of °OH. The AC-catalyzed transformation of O3into °OH for creating an O3-based AOP may be of practical interest to water utilities as an alternative to extended reaction times, to hydrogen peroxide addition, or to UV-catalyzed transformation of O3. We propose the name “Carbozone Process” for this new type of AOP.
