During the quarter century that the CAES workshop has existed, it has provided agricultural economists with the opportunity to test views in open discussion and group thinking sessions. It has largely met its originally objectives, namely to provide an opportunity for intensive study of current problems, to initiate research in various areas, and to make the results of such specialized study available to a wider audience. The workshop has been most successful when it provided discussion of a current topic of interest to the agricultural industry or professionals, was held in a location conducive to study, was held separately from any other conference, provided a readable Proceedings, and allowed sufficient time for full discussion of the topic.

This study presents an annual macro‐type econometric model of the Canadian agricultural sector. The model is designed to depict and forecast some of the important activities of the agricultural economy. This agricultural model is linked with a well established existing econometric model of the Canadian economy—the TRACE model. Forecasting results using the agricultural model with and without the linkage with the TRACE modfhtre discussed. Government expenditure multipliers of the TRACE model with and without the linkage of the agricultural model are also examined and discussed.

The objective of this paper is to extend the specification of conventional production functions to a stochastic production frontier in order to explain productivity differences among firms. This involves explicitly incorporating the random variability, which is beyond the farm operator's control, and the true farmer specific variability, which is under his control, into the model. Assuming a Cobb‐Douglas production relationship, the model was estimated by the maximum likelihood method. Using the estimated results, the causes for the farmer specific variability were identified.

SummaryThis study is unique and crucial to the current time period because of the recent high energy price escalation. The uniqueness of this study pertains to the void in energy impact research of the agricultural sector, more specifically to livestock. The U.S. Department of Energy has models estimating economy‐wide impacts, but not the specific impacts on agriculture. The Iowa State study concentrated on the grain sector. The results presented here indicate that energy price increases will have substantial effects on livestock prices and production. Energy price increases will also result in differential impacts on livestock commodities (with poultry and eggs having the largest price and production effects). Furthermore, the multi‐period framework enables the livestock model to capture lagged production responses. Noticeable is the higher impacts occurring in the third and fourth years. In the future, higher energy costs may induce changes in U.S. production, processing and distribution patterns of livestock commodities. The highly vertically integrated poultry and egg industries may begin shifting production locations away from the colder northern regions to areas with more temperate climates. For industries like beef, pork and dairy, there may be increased range production to reduce impacts from higher feed costs. For all industries, closer proximity of processing plants to major livestock producing areas may oc
