摘要:
Alpheus heterochaeliswere collected near Beaufort, N.C. Males have a greater ratio of claw length/total body length than females. In field‐caught pairs, females tend to have longer bodies and males tend to have larger claws. In Y‐maze tests, males tend to seek females on the basis of chemical cues. The intensity of the sound produced by the large claw is positively correlated with claw size. Thus, stimulus intensity offers potential cues to the size of an opponent. Cine studies reveal that the large claw closes within 1.67–5.00 msec during snap production. An ensuing water jet travels at ca. 1.5–4.0 mm/sec and is directed toward an opponent. Size restrictions found in paired shrimp are hypothesized to result from an agonistic “balance”; established during initial contacts made prior to sex determination and pairing. The male's larger claw size/body size is explained by selection pressure favouring his mating with larger females who can produce more offspring.

摘要:
Previous workers’ views on the behavioural determination of local distribution patterns of animals in the sea are critically reappraised in the light of ecological observations. The concept of causality is examined, ambiguous terminology identified, and a synthesis of apparently opposing views presented.

摘要:
Individuals of the spider crabMithrax spinosissimusliving in a canal in the Florida Keys were marked and their movements followed over a four‐month period. Individual home range size, extent of daily movement, and extent of day‐night movement were calculated. Although males and females moved similar distances when they did move from one crevice to another, males re‐located more frequently. There was no correlation between animal size and any measure of movement. Extent of daily movement was inversely correlated with spider crab density, especially for female crabs.

摘要:
When juvenile lobsters(Homarus americanus)were held in pairs from one molt to the next, the dominant animal always molted first. Activity levels, size, and the availability of shelter and food are related to dominance rank. Immediately after molting the dominance status reversed; the previously dominant lobster usually regained its status several days later.

摘要:
Ablation of antennular filaments, but not antennal filaments, selectively eliminates the chemically‐mediated host location behavior displayed by two species of symbiotic caridean shrimps to their respective hosts. It is suggested that the antennules of marine decapod crustaceans function in the distance perception of highly specific chemosensory stimuli as well as the previously reported generalized stimuli associated with feeding behavior.

摘要:
1.A description of the swimming behavior ofAplysia brasilianais provided, and its performance in currents and orientational capabilities evaluated.2.Aplysiaare able to swim for considerable duration, to maintain a fairly straight path, and to make progress against natural currents. Hence this behavior seems to be a functional means of local movement. There is no present evidence that swimming is an escape response.3.A. brasilianaare able to modify swimming effort depending on their direction of travel relative to the current, so as to achieve a more constant ground speed.4.Releases over a clear sand bottom in shallow water indicate that swimming is an oriented movement, on an individual and group basis.
