摘要:
A young Cape GannetSula capensisresponded to high ambient temperatures in the laboratory by standing, gular fluttering with raised head and open bill, wing drooping, defaecating at a fast rate close to or onto the feet, “paddling”; in the excreta, and increased breathing rate. Standing initially caused a decline in foot temperature which rose with rising ambient temperature. Gular flutter and wing drooping assisted the bird in tolerating heat stress. Reduction in heat‐load occurred when standing on a wet surface, presumably due to evaporative heat loss (of excreta on the feet = urohidrosis) and an enhanced conduction of heat to substrate. Field observations confirmed that young Cape Gannets defaecate onto their feet at high ambient temperatures. This species appears preadapted for this behaviour since it builds a solely guano nest, defaecating onto the rim which is compacted by “paddling”;.

摘要:
Burrowing activity was utilized as a measure of the ability of the hard shell clam(Mercenaria mercenaria)and the Atlantic surf clam(Spisula solidissima)to cope with extremes of temperature and dissolved oxygen. Clams were removed from clean sand substrate and the progress of reburial timed. Experiments were conducted in a once through circulating seawater system in which temperatures were maintained at selected(?T)increments above ambient levels.

摘要:
The present work concerns previously undescribed external sense organs observed on the rock lobsterPalinurus vulgarisL. Each sensilla is composed of a feather‐like extension inserted in a cuticular depression in the rim of which there is a knob, the significance of which is discussed. Two or three bipolar cells innervate each organ.

摘要:
InNassarius reticulatus,as a result of chemical or mechanical stimulation of the siphon, nervous activity was detected in the siphonal nerve and in theosphradial nerve having a connexion with the siphonal ganglion. The activity was probably not of the primary receptors but of elements in the conduction pathway to the central ganglionic mass.
